Commercial Description:
This time the Otter is going to Germany, with "Otterbahn," a weizenbock, set for May release. "Otterbahn" is a unique combination of a hefeweizen (unfiltered wheat beer), and a bock (robust malty ale). The wheat adds a citrus like flavor and light body, the unique yeast strain produces clove like character and banana esters. The addition of toasted malts adds even more complexity to this already full-flavored style. As they say in Germany- prosit!

An unclear brown beer - somewhat murky, with a thin light brown head. The aroma is a weird spicy one combined with notes of cellery. The flavor is sweet malty with a light roasted note. Not good for the style.

Well, back to rating, and 1st up is this one. The body poured very dark, red highlights. Head was creamy and foamy tan. Nose is roasted, with some sour malts and a slight touch of alcohol. The taste, nice. The alcohol is present thru out, but not a distraction. The was caramel and sour malt as in the nose. Finish a tad bit sour, with the effervesce of the %. Very good brew, I appreciate the experiment.

Pours a dark, dark brown, almost black. The average sized head is khaki and creamy. The aroma is a bit too alcoholic with a cloves and the funky, slightly vegetal aroma that hefeweizen yeasts sometimes get. A bit of cocoa and perhaps a touch of charcoal mix in with the flavors. Pinenuts. Not bad, but the head from the alcohol is unbalanced.

Poured watery black with copper hues from the bottle with a white head. Smells of roasted malt, smoke, sweet and hoppy. Taste the roasted malt right away, with brown sugar and honey notes. The taste is fruity as well as malty. Finish is clean and warm, hinting of the extra alcohol. I tasted this at the brewery and it was amazing, soft and subtle. Out of the bottle it was less exciting but still very good.

Bottle (650ml). Drank this sucker myself. Deep claret colour, smallish foamy tan head. Grainy sweet roast malt aroma, slightly sour, light alcohol, like over-done toast with a bit of Marmite on it. Boozy, sweet, roast malt taste, a little syrupy, a very small hint of fruit, definite alcohol and some hop bitterness, somewhat nutty finish. Thick, oily, flat mouthfeel - not bad, a little too cloying, but nice and ear-warming.

7/15/06 - Pours black brown. Smells of smoke, dark wheat, malt, and spice. Nice malt flavor mixed with notes of banana wheat.
