Commercial Description:
This time the Otter is going to Germany, with "Otterbahn," a weizenbock, set for May release. "Otterbahn" is a unique combination of a hefeweizen (unfiltered wheat beer), and a bock (robust malty ale). The wheat adds a citrus like flavor and light body, the unique yeast strain produces clove like character and banana esters. The addition of toasted malts adds even more complexity to this already full-flavored style. As they say in Germany- prosit!

Not a stellar example of a weizenbock. Poured a murky/cloudy brown with some orange/amber tones. Head was weak, as was the lacing. The aroma was light smoke, plastic, wheat, and bananas. Some chocolate in the flavor but this thing was harsh and really undeveloped, astringent, somewhat of a bitter rye/wheat sharp character, ash and bubblegum also there. Mouthfeel was right down the middle, maybe a tad acidic.

dark brown, small off white head, light to medium carbonation. aroma is not very heavy, mostly of dark malts, some citrus. Taste is dark malts and dark fruits, a lightly bitter and citrus finish. A tad thin for the style.

Poured a hazy, dark reddish brown color with a small, light tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet, dried fruits, with some banana, caramel apples, yeast, cocoa, some light spices, and nuts. Taste of more cocoa, with raisins, yeast, sweet cherries, toffee, and light alcohol.

Pours dark mahogany with a fully receding white head. Aroma of aromatic malt, reduced raisin syrup, caramel, and toffee. Taste is more aromatic malt, raisins, prunes, toffee. Mouthfeel is thin bodied with moderate carbonation. I think they tried to emphasize the bock more than the weizen. If they’d nix the aromatic and boil the wort longer I’d like. Need to rerate at some point.

Decent sized fluffy head. Lasts for a while with light carbonation. Interesting aroma. Initially I get composting grass then big roastyness and leather and some roasted (burnt) corn. Color is a very dark port brown. Big roastyness but also considerably dryness and bitterness. Hides its alcohol pretty well. A little cocoa and coffee in there. Rich and creamy mouthfeel with a lingering roastyness and dryness. A decent brew but really nothing special.

Poured a mostly clear dark brown chestnut type of color with a medium off-white head. The aroma was a little odd. Not bad but so strong in two componants. I found it to be big on chocolate and big on lemon. They seemed distinct and not blending. I think I liked it though. The flavor was not to my liking as much. Lemony and yeasty with a dry bitter finish.

Poured dark ruby with a thick tan head. Good retention. Nose is wheat, chocolate, cloves, banana and butterscotch. Notes of toffee and coffee are added into the flavor. Full palate which was very smooth. This is a style that is hard for American Breweries to copy. It was nice but nothing like the German versions I’ve had. Great beer that I would have again.

Clear, chestnut colored brew with red edging, nice color. Head is small, tan and short lived. Nose is a bit doughy, yeasty with bready maltiness and gentle bananna esthers. Body is medium, a touch slick. Flavorful malts, light doses of chocolate and caramel with fruity yeasts backing them, notes of bananna and raisin also. Finish is lightly sweet malts.
