Commercial Description:
This time the Otter is going to Germany, with "Otterbahn," a weizenbock, set for May release. "Otterbahn" is a unique combination of a hefeweizen (unfiltered wheat beer), and a bock (robust malty ale). The wheat adds a citrus like flavor and light body, the unique yeast strain produces clove like character and banana esters. The addition of toasted malts adds even more complexity to this already full-flavored style. As they say in Germany- prosit!

An unclear brown beer - somewhat murky, with a thin light brown head. The aroma is a weird spicy one combined with notes of cellery. The flavor is sweet malty with a light roasted note. Not good for the style.

22 oz bottle-pours a rich dissipating tan head and dark mahogany color. Aroma is dark malt-cocoa powder, dark fruit, some sharpness. Taste is sweet dark malt-some sharpness-cocoa powder/licorice, oak barrel-whisky like, dark fruit, musty, roasty, secondary/faint hops bite, some alcohol. OK carbonation. First half pint a bit rough to my taste, then mellowed and became more enjoyable.

Muddy unexciting brown pour covered by a sheet of off-white foam. Potent banana esters bathe in gentle alcohol and a bittersweet vegetal note, reminiscent of earth tomatoes. Kinda bold malt character, heading toward beef stock flavors, slightly salty and unfortunately lacking in wheat character which went basically unnoticed. Warm nutty flavors emanate towards the finish. Slightly loose mouthfeel displays adequate carbonation.

Draft... Murky brown ale with a small, creamy, white head. The nose delivers notes of chocolate, banana, dark, dried fruits, light molasses and overripe apple. Well-balanced for the style (bock), but lightly sweet and chocolatey overall with mild, fruity esters and well-veiled alcohol. Short, clean, dry finish.

Bottle sampled on 7/2/06: Pours a transparent dark copper mahogany with thin-lacing off-white head. Sweet toasty cookie dough aroma has a dark roasty wheat presence and mild bready yeastiness. Body starts with a nice, mild dark caramel malty sweetness and some light tart fruity character toward the drier, mildly bready finish. A decently authentic weizenbock.

Pours brown with a thin whittish head. Smells of smoked malt, nuts, some clove. Tastes of chocolate, cognac, coffee, some citrus.
