Commercial Description:
We’re rolling out a new Imperial series with the first beer scheduled to release January ’09. These larger-than-life beers will be sold in 22 oz bottles and on draft. Brewed with more malts and more hops, these beers are big, bold, flavorful, and high-octane. The first in the series is a Russian Imperial Stout. The style was first brewed in England for the Russian Czar and it is the king of stouts. Plenty of big malt flavors- chocolate and roasted- and high alcohol with lower carbonation and mild hops. We brewed this beer with double the malts and four times the hops of regular stouts! Otter Creek Russian Imperial Stout clocks in around 10% ABV- a beer to be savored responsibly. True to style, this beer will last for years so you may want to stock up on a few bottles for your cellar while it’s available.

ook is a healthy black liquid with some great head. Scent is too sweet smelling off of the bat..this is how I imagined the 08 darkness would smell after reading the descriptions (It didn’t) Taste unfortunately follows the smell, just too sweet. This is a stout for fans of Old Rasputin and Fresh Yeti, not so much those on the Blackout/Speedway end. Mouth is nearly perfect, thick bodied and light carbonated. This is a decent beer and clearly has a place, but it is not for me.

Bottle. Deep brown ( it’s opaque, but it ain’t black) with a beautiful tan head and lace throughout. Nose of cherries, chocolate, roasted malts, coffee. Flavor is similar with a sweet chocolate cherry note followed by some cocoa and some hop bitterness.

A pretty nice RIS that surprised me after I wasn’t too impressed with their Oktoberfest. Nice appearance, black and viscous with a medium tan head. Aroma of coffee and roast with a little dark fruit. Flavor very roasty and coffeeish, which I like, with sweet malt and bitter chocolate. A little rough in a good way. Palate fairly thick, yet slightly astringent. Above average for the style.

A dark black beer with a small tan head. Aroma was sweet, roasted, coffee, & alcohol. Taste was dark fruit, roasty, coffee, mild chocolate, with a good amount of different flavors to offer yet it was smooth with the alcohol becoming more noticeable as it warms up.

Bottle from DTM. I got a lot more coffee out of this one than chocolate and wasn’t particularly impressed with the palate, but this was more good than bad. Good full flavor and nice foam and lacing.

(Rating #2557)

This black ale poured with a generous tan head and a strong chocolate aroma. The flavor is bitter chocolate, coffee and treacle with a woarming alcohol trail. It’s a real nice flavor.

Thanks to hophead75 for shooting me this one. Pours a viscous oil black and dons a one finger moussey chestnut brown head. Very impressive and inviting pour. Nose is rich, jumps out with tannic cherry skins, burnt sugar, molasses, and lactose. Mild metallic notes and hints of astringency. The nose doesn’t carry the chocolate and coffee profile I would like and features more yeast influence. First sip is rich, sweet malt and black strap molasses. A noticeable grain roast and astringency make up for an absence of hop bitterness. With warmth it becomes cloying and shows hints of soy sauce and acetaldehyde. The palate showcases a mild alcoholic warmth with a nice viscosity paired with an unpleasant grain astringency.
