Draught at Horniblow’s Tavern at the Edenton Brewery in Raleigh, NC. Clear dark dark brown. Smells faintly of chocolate and coffee. Most prominent flavor is brown sugar, which persists into the aftertaste. Slightly sweet.

Bottle. This one is a long way from home. Dark brown with medium head. Decent nose, and very good palate. Strong malts and a light hops makes this an excellent and balanced brew. This is one of those creations that is equal to the sum of its parts. Very easy to drink.

bottle. very dark, deep brown body with a medium-sized tan head. aroma is mostly creamy roast with a fair share of bittersweet chocolate. some sour flavour notes as well as rather restrained roastiness. some sticky chocolate flavours too. fairly thin and one-dimensional. long bitter finish. mediocre.

12 oz. bottle, Bottle date 6/27/05, Lot #1739. Pours a lovely deep brown with a brown head. Keen smell of deep coffee roast malt. This is a good example of one of my favorite styles. Malt aplenty, and a pick of hops that throws in a bit more bitter than is standard. Dark roast malts give it a good impression of dryness. A little light in the expected coffee and chocolate taste after smelling it, but it’s still another great find. Picked it up at the Wild Oats store in Hinsdale, IL

12-oz. bottle, bottled 12/06/04, batch # 1658. Pours dark brown with mahagony notes peeking through where the light shines in, small bubly tan head with some lined lacing. Deep dark chocolate and coffee, caramel malt aroma like fresh brewed coffee and malted mik balls, Whoppers. Dark chocolate and bitter coffee start to the flavor with light acidity and floral hops in the background, well hidden near the finish with a lingering hop bitterness and acidity that seems dry, and a touch of smokiness. Dark medium bodied and fizzy dry palate.

screw-cap bottle (!) This pours super deep ruby, nearly opaque, with a modest tan head. The aroma is some flat chocolate and barley. The flavor is sturdy with cacao powder, but with a waterier finish and thus is a little unbalanced. Pretty one-dimensional, but not bad.

My favorite Otter Creek offering. Toasty malt greets, accompanied by surrounding hop presence. Finishes with a tantalizing bitter hop lingerness. First tasted it several years ago up in New Hampshire; glad it’s finally available down here in Maryland!

Dark malt, smokey aroma This porter is very good smooth and dry.. Roasted smoke, malty flavor with hoppiness to it.
