Commercial Description:
This is a traditional porter, made to warm the bones. Nearly black in color, Stovepipe Porter has a rich palate and a roasted, hoppy and slightly herbal aroma.

Poured a midnight brown from the bottle, slightly off-white head that didn’t last and little lacing. Small amounts of bubbles rising to the top. Smoky, roasted coffee and moderately high malt dominate the aroma. The label claims that there is an herbal aroma, but I can’t sense it. The flavor is bitter and long lasting. I suppose the hops contribute to the bitterness. The palate is medium-bodied, creamy with a good deal of carbonation in the mouth. A very drinkable beer.

Bottle (12oz). Pours a deep clear deep ruby-brown (like strong black tea) with a smallish very light tan foamy head. Aroma of strong coffee, chocolate, deep roast malt, peat, yeast and must. Taste is quite light, yeasty roast malt, coffee, chocolate, apple sauce, woodsmoke, and cola. Got weirdly fishy on warming. Mouthfeel a little thin and flat, even for a porter.

Very black, small fast-fading head, small ring of nice lace. Aromas of burnt toast, peat, caramel/toffee, espresso, and hops. Flavors were yeasty bread, smoke, peat, toffee, chocolate, coffee and hop bitterness. Quite bitter, not at all fruity or sweet like many Porters. Good mouthfeel, heavy but not thick. Long-lasting bitter aftertaste. Not for the faint of heart.

Thanks to Slob for this. Coffee and roasted barley though the latter is much more subdued. Dark brown to black color with a fast fading bubble head. Comes across as an instant coffee pouch steeped in water. Little else there really other than some slight roastiness. Flavor is good though simple but the palate feels thin.

Cask (GBBF): Black with a tan head. Hoppy nose. Sweet choc with a hoppy grapefruit finish. Medium refreshing porter.

I hate to say it, but this beer totally sucks. Aroma is of coffee, sure, but more like the dank, nasty coffee smell eminating from your garbage can 3 days after you poured the rinds in there. Palate is watery and the flavor is little different than the garbage can aroma, only worse. What the hell is this junk.

Sampled at GBBF 05 (on tap?). Very dark, no head. Very hoppy aroma - wait a minute, this is a Porter!! Very hoppy flavour too - slick rivulets of hop, in a restrained soft roast. Delicious. Unusual for a Porter, but very drinkable indeed. One of my beers of the fest.

Dark black with decent tan head. Aroma is all roasted coffee, with some burnt grain in the background. Strange but flavor is the opposite of the aroma, all roasted grain with a little coffee in the finish. Little too watery.
