Flavors have been described by others - they combine OK, but not perfectly. Nice aroma, isn’t quite matched by the flavor. jb (1063), Rochester, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Dec 23, 2004 The beer was dark dark brown with dark red highlights. The head was white and thin. The aroma was subtle with the coffee and roasted tones. The feel in the mouth was exquisite, creamy, chewy, with a great balance of hops in the finish. MarkBarnes (270), Waterville, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 22, 2004 My first thought upon tasting this (bottle) was that the "Stovepipe" moniker was quite apt. There’s definitely a "burnt" and "roasted" quality to the taste of this hearty brew that mixes quite nicely with its spices and hop finish. Very "warming" and satisfying; and I’ll be happy to have this again soon as we head into another Northeastern Winter. GuilTTy (538), Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 22, 2004 Dark brown with deep reddish-black highlites when held to the light under a foamy tan head with medium/thin lacing. Roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and a little vanilla aroma with a mild spicy note. Full bodied mouthfeel with plenty of well balanced cocoa, coffee, toffee and malt flavor. Consistent and flavorful finish of dark chocolate with just a hint of hops. Nice porter. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 20, 2004 Appearance: murky deep brown, leaning on black, with red tints at edges, and a lush crown of cream-in-the-coffee foam that looms large, then settles to a slim ring.
Aroma: right off, a perfect mesh of cocoa and espresso, a lovely mocha java in the nose, and, in the mouth?...
..light hops, full malt, with that great flavor described from the nose washing all over the palate, rinsing the mouth with this ideal match of dark delights, while still being incredibly smooth, very easy drinkability. Full bodied, with a lond, delectable, chocolate-laced finish. Great coffee/cocoa flavor never flags, sags, or even sighs, it just keeps on pleasing.
Great porter, one I’d happily turn to if the option were mine. cfranz (261), Acton, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Dec 6, 2004 Dark wine coloured, with a little head that dissipated quickly. I found the taste quite complex - what I expect in a porter - some french roast coffee, portwine, and dark chocolate. I also detected some smokiness, which reminded me a bit of Lapsam Souchong tea. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 28, 2004 Bottle from slob - thanks Bert! Pours opaque dark brown with chestnut highlights when held to light and a large tan head taht lingers well and leaves nice laciing. Aroma is dark bitter chocolate and espresso - very roasty and warm smelling. Flavor is sweet, dark malts, chocolate, coffee with floral hoppiness in the finish and a lingering bitter-charcoal aftertaste. Medium to full body and light, creamy carbonation. Satisfying porter. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 23, 2004 A dark beer with a strong hop flavor. I’ll have to go to Vermont to find it on tap to give it some bubbles. Not much head but a well built beer with excellent taste.
