Chocolate and roasty scent. Coffee and dark fruits. Rich and savory sweet. Flavor is more roasted malts and chocolate with a molasses presence and a bit of coffee. No real bitters here. Perhaps a bit smokey... Overall very smooth and a rich flavor. CapnJazz (35), Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 6, 2008 Have had this on tap at the brewpub and via 22 oz bottles. Deep chestnut brown with a super creamy mocha head. Strong coffee aroma and flavors, alot of chocolately malt, vanilla, and some burnt flavors as well. A bit heavy at times, but really full, rich, and tasty. Have had this on nitro and regular draft...nitro imparts a really soft, creamy quality to this that I just love. Dark brown leather bordering black with a small 1/4 inch latte-colored head that leaves spotty lacing. Aroma is subtle but inviting. Caramel, toffee, brown sugar, smoke and vanilla. The flavor exhibits darker notes: bitter chocolate, roasted coffee, and molasses...a hint of alcohol but it doesn’t take away from the brew. Thick, creamy and luxurious...great beer!!! Thanks again Joey!!! hellbilly (1534), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 17, 2008 bomber by way of kramer. pours fairly opaque and just next to black with a small orange tinted hot cocoa colored head. it fades rather quickly to a ring and leaves behind spotty lacing. smells a bit like clothes the day after you’ve been hanging around a camp fire... very mellow smokiness, milky chocolate, cooked dark dried fruits, umame/soy, loads of roasty grain, wood/vanilla and alcohol florals as it warms. tastes kinda like black bread... you know, the stuff steamed in a tin can... vanilla, wood, molasses, anise, unidentifiable dry fruit, roasty grain, tobacco and a spicy dry hoppy finish. alcohol burns a bit as it reaches room temperature but it is in no way unpleasant. coffee peeks it’s head in the aftertaste. velvety rich mouth feel with a medium full body. powerful and at the same time very chugalicious...
