| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 19, 2009 Draught at the brewpub. Pours dark brown-black with thin tan head. The aroma is roasty and slightly sweet with some chocolate mousse and ash notes. The flavor is roasted grain, but without a harsh edge. There are milk chocolate and toffee notes behind that. There’s a bit of a lively citrus bite from the hops, but just enough to provide balance. A mild pistacchio note arises in the finish and sticks around into the aftertaste. Quite good in my opinion. austinpowers (2828), New York, New York, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 24, 2008 On tap at the brewpub. Deep, stained mahogany pour with a fuming, beautiful, crisp, sustaining head in beige. Light roast, salt and toast aroma. Dampened. Flavor is initially clean, bright and alive with fresh bready malt and an immediate bitter edge. Higher, yet gentle alcohols. Mature, fruit character, really. But, then as this warms it really starts to pick up. Soft, warm tones in brandy and fruit go back and forth with glowing malt and bits of ash. It’s actually an interesting and inviting Schwarz. So fresh and delightful. Hop flavor develops as a spicy, woody tint in the beer. Dominates the mid-profile moreso than the smack or back end. Smacks out on a rich butterscotch, heavy caramel. One of those real refined, deep, and quietly expressive Otto’s beers. Kudos for turning a typically blah style into something I enjoyed. FROTHINGSLOSH (2036), GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA
