Commercial Description:
Geuze is a classic among the Belgian Ales, following spontaneous fermentation in wooden barrels (no yeast or sugar added), young and old Lambic are blended; which results in a dry, tart and fruity wine like taste. Oud Beersel Geuze Ale is the white sparkling wine of the ale world.

(37.5cl bottle) Hazy, golden colour with a medium sized eggshell-coloured frothy head. Slightly acidic and apple-/citrus-fruity aroma with notes of vinegar and cheesy barnyard-like elements. Sourish flavour, medium to light bodied with a moderate carbonation. Mouldy lambic taste with notes of apples and citrus with rural farmhouse character; dry and slightly acidic and tart finish with mouldy notes (24.08.08).

Aroma is sharp, citrusy. Color is hazy, pale yellow-orange with a persistent thin head. Flavor starts with citrus, then moves into a slightly wheaty, slightly funky phase. Finish is crisp, almost abrupt. Palate is light and a bit astringent. Overall, it’s easy to see why the label copy calls it "the white sparkling wine of the ale world."

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy gold, cascading bubbles froth up to a large white head that then settles down real quick. Quite acidic on the nose, lemon, leather and some old cheese and barnyard funk. A little spiciness from the brett is apparent too. Taste is tart initially, apples and leather and some spice. The flavor doesn’t live up to the suggestion of acidity in the nose. That was a disappointment. Some wheat flavors, along with a slight bitterness at the end. Well-carbed, tingly and fizzy. Nice and dry. Most affordable of the traditional lambics that are locally available.

Bottle (375 ml) from Systembolaget. Hazy amber golden with a large white head. Quite complex cidery aroma with green apples and grapefruit, along with woody and funky barnyard notes. Moussy mouthfeel. Relatively mild acidity, very well balanced.

375ml caged and corked bottle, served in a flute. After battling to get the cork to budge it exploded into my hand with a thunderous pop. Pours lemony yellow with a large audible white head. Smells of lemon, leather, wheat, fruit juice, pepper. Amazing smell! Taste is leather, wood, funk, lemon, lightly tart, some smoke, and a touch of pepper. Prickly mouthfeel compliments the flavor well. Finishes very dry with a bit of lingering lemon flavor. An excellent experience.

375, corked and baled, Brouwer’s. Pours a rich-looking cloudy orange with a thick platinum blonde head. Big lemony tart nose. Creamy, fizzy, medium body with sharp carb, almost prickly. Lemony, vinegary tartness on the mid-palate with some pronounced mineral dryness near the finish. Clean, crisp, refreshing beer.

This beer made quite an impression right away - on my ceiling! As soon as the cage was loosened, the cork rocketed right off, taking the cage with it, hit the ceiling, and then landed somewhere in my kitchen, to be discovered tomorrow morning I’m sure. Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with a massive (massive!) head with good retention (which I killed so I could drink the damn thing!) Pungent, tangy aroma, lightly sweet. Tastes much drier but not as tart as some Gueuzes I’ve had before. Light fruit, quince & pear, peppery, saison-like. Nice dry hoppy finish. Body is moderately carbonated, thin. Not too bad, not a favourite style, but I can’t really find fault with this one.

375 ml, bb 20/04/2025. Lightly hazy, golden pear color with a lasting cap of foam. Aroma of musty grapes, tart apple and cider vinegar. Flavor initially is earthy grape and apple; quickly gets totally knocked over by lemon juice and cardboard. Light-medium body is tingly and dry with acidity. Not a fan.
