tiggmtl (4181), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Apr 18, 2008 Plenty of nutty and lightly roasty notes to the malt forward aroma. Sweetness almost suggests a cola-like coffee. Clear dark chestnut brown body is topped by a generous and lasting, foamy, fine bubbled tan head that sticks to the sides of the glass. Flavour is sweet and nutty up front with a nice bitterness and dark malt character especially in the aftertaste. Not as sweet as the aroma suggests. Medium body is smooth in the mouth with very piquant carbonation that awakens the tongue without becoming prickly. Tulip glass. Cellar temperature. Bottle (Kensington, Oct-07).
Powertrip (64), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Aug 30, 2008 70% Cocoa dominates but is nicely rounded with some deeply roasted mexican coffee beans. Such a pleasant nose to welcome! Black is correct, as in the colour. No seeing through this one! Oh oh, things go badly in the mouth! There are some roasted nuts to mention, but an overpowering bittnerness takes hold immediately and gets worse as it goes through the palate. The finish is a mess and it follows with a lingering woody throat. What happened here? It all started so well! namzad (5), , Saskatchewan, Canada does not count Aug 7, 2008 A wonderfully complex brew! Tried it at a local pub on tap and have been enjoying it in bottles ever since. The pour, for me, was a thick slightly tan color head that diminishes rather quickly. Not a lot of carbonation. The aroma is beautiful; toasty nuts, coffee and maybe chocolate. I get a watery palate when served on tap, but a full bodied flavor from the bottle. The finish is slightly sweet, slightly bitter and lasts forever. One of my all time favorites and glad it’s brewed in my home town! jcwattsrugger (3942), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Jul 7, 2008 12oz bottle @Joe’s NYC Gathering shared by –pours a thin offwhite head with mahogany color. Aroma is nice dark malt-anise. Taste is dark malt, slight earthy hops. Light/medium body. Enjoyable. JoeMcPhee (3692), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Jun 28, 2008 Thank to Matthew for bringing me a couple of these bottles to share. Dark black colour with a thin white head. Aroma is fairly fruity with loads of cold coffee, some chicory and a bit of toasted cocoa. A kind of watery palate and a grassy/vegetal character. Chewy with a little bit of earthiness and woodiness. Strange beast, this one. puzzl (1732), New York, New York, USA Jun 26, 2008 Bottle at Joe’s tasting. First beer of te night. Very dark brown pour with a slight foam cap. Light sucrose, light roast, beety, wheat. Kind of cucumber and ash flavor, with strong peanut brittle. A bit sharp.
