RblWthACoz (959), Brooklyn, New York, USA Feb 2, 2008 It’s time like these that take me back to my late teenage years when I tasted Spaten for the first time and though to myself: "What the hell is this?? This is what beer can be??"
Pours a very dark brown amber. Looks ruby tinted when held to light. Nose is mild cherry woods. Stays consistent and never waivers. Flavor is mildy sour. Mild wood character. Really; mild is the key word here. Feel is thick a bit on the liquid and good on the bubble. Overall pretty drinkable. Seems a bit rough around the edges (though it isn’t much really). Definitely a very good version of the style, but not the absolute greatest. This might be a good introductory beer for newcomers to the style.
IDunno19 (33), Ames, Iowa, USA Oct 12, 2008 Pleasantly surprised! Complex almost vinous aroma of the typical high end beers from Europe but with a hint of sweetness. Of course I was surprised to find that the flavor has a great kick of, well, sour! Not sour like sweet and sour sauce but truly sour like warheads candy. Though bordering on overdone, the flavor is still mellowed enough by the natural beer flavor to be unique and enjoyable. Pours a gorgeous mahogany color with little to no head. grandridge (160), Port Clinton, Ohio, USA Oct 5, 2008 2007 Batch 8 bottle 1222. Pours amber with a light white head that fades quickly to a ring aroung the outside of the glass. Aroma is tart, lambic, slight wood and funk. Flavor is smooth, some sour but not overwhelming. Vinigar stronger than lactic in this sour. I like it better the other way around but still a solid sour. Carbonation is weak but not flat. Finish is dry, would like to see more lactic and a more dry finish. fredandboboflo (633), East Setauket, New York, USA Sep 28, 2008 Bottle from 08 Night of the Funk. Aroma very woody and sour. Flavor has a tart citrus with earth and soft fruits. Tasty, if not a stand out. LilBeerDoctor (642), East Setauket, New York, USA Sep 28, 2008 2006 bottle sampled on 09/26/08 at Night of the Funk. Pours a clear brown with no head. Aroma of bourbon. Flavor of light tartness and lots of hard alcohol. Hmm, this one just wasn’t that good and the alcohol was too strong. Furseth (1167), Kungälv, Sweden Sep 1, 2008 Bottle: Hazy yellow/red colour, with a thin almost no head at all. Aroma is sour, citrus, flowery. Flavor is sour, and citric, thin to medium body, long sour/citrus finish.
