Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

Batch #8, 2005 edition. Pours a medium-dark chestnut brown with a medium-large, loose, mottled light tan head. Sour aromas with ripe fruits, oxidative notes from barrel aging, and soft nutty malt underpinnings. Not overly aggressive, but persistent, complex, and intriguing. The flavor follows closelyfrom the characteristics expressed in the nose except for less fruitiness and a bit more malt spiciness. The aging characteristics, both from the barrel and the bottle age. contributed greatly to the complexity of this beer. Very easy-going, well-rounded body with a nicely structured alcohol component. Contrasting palate characteristics with both bright freshness and draker aged characteristics. Quite a fun beer.

Very good beer. Flavor has three distinct flavors: sour with a little sweetness in the beginning, then a bit of bitterness in the middle, finishing with a little heat and oak flavor. Pours a dark red with little hear. Nose of bready sourness. I am partial to this style, and it is one of my favorites.

’05 bottle, poured attractive deep ruby with a touch of brown and no head. Sweet and tart cherries fill the nose, with a similar but more complex flavor. Tons of oak and a lasting finish.

2007 bottle shared by tupalev at the KW group tasting at his house. thanks for the share on this one jeff!! one of the best beers ive ever had. this wasnt a popular brew among some of the tasting participants so i enjoyed multiple pours. pours dark maroon with an off white, i had samples in my tulip for over an hour and they still had great head retention. big sour aroma with great malt presence, lots of fruitiness, some cherry pit, leather, very good. this made my mouth water every time i smelled it. the flavour was equaly fantastic, and startlingly complex. approachable for someone not familiar with sours yet redeeming to anyone who appreciates the style. thanks jeff for sharing and jesse ill take your bottle if you dont want it. great beer.

Bottle shared at Tupalev’s (thanks Jeff). Pours an interesting hazy red with a small cap. Aroma is hugely distinctive, somewhat Orval like, some Brett, leather, ’horse saddle’ is the word I used, maybe some spice. The flavour doesn’t dissapoint, with a lot of perky sourness that fizzles fast with some lemon lime zing. More of the leather and horse saddle combining with the spicyness to create some sort of weird, sharp distinctive flavour that’s hard to describe fully. A tiny hop presence is there too. Not at all boozy. A bit of pepper, at least I found to be evident. Very impressive beer that I’m very glad to have tried, though I think I prefer the Cantillon for sours.

This was a pretty beautiful beer. Not quite as sour as I had expected but certinally as dry and oaky, very wine like. There was a little bit of vinegar like flavor but the gorgeous eartiness saved it indeed. Throw in some like fruit flavors like cherry perhaps a little plum and you’ve got it. This was great.
