Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

Courtesy of Retorp. 2005 vintage. Pours an off-caramel color with a thin white head. Some musty aromas along with sour, yeast, apples, ripe fruit and bread notes. Flavor is balsmaic vinegar, subtle cherry notes with some sour fruit and grape flavors as well. Generally medium body with a tart finish.

Bottle courtesy of fordest. Pours a hazy purple-red color with a small off-white head. The Aroma was moderate in strength with cherries, grapes and some apple. The flavor was sour forward with red fruits and a bit of sour grape. The mouthfeel was silky smooth with light carbonation, the finish was short and dry. Overall: a very tasty sour. Thanks Sean.

2007 Bottle - Batch 8, bottle number 0509. Poured a ruby red with an off-white head that had a thin cap lasting and light lace. Fruity aroma with a slight wheat background. The flavor finds fruits, cherry and apple, with a wood and earthy background. Medium body, dry, sour-tart throughout. Tart fruit aftertaste. Very decent.

vintage 2005. Pours hazy pale reddish color with fluffy off white head. Sour, musty aroma. The flavor starts off moderately sour, but not mouth puckering sour. It finishes with smooth eartiness and no aftertaste. Light, crisp and refreshing, almost champagne-like. Excellent.

A very interesting beer. Whenever I want to serve something unique, I pour this one. I like it a lot. It is sour though. Ruby-brown color with off-white head. Wood, earthy, citrus, whiskey Clean and enjoyable aftertaste. I’m a fan.

Tasting at Brewtopia. Cloudy brown pour. Small whitish head. I smell some funky sour notes with cherries and some yeast and malt. Flavor is sweet/tart with a pleasant dryness. Finishes pretty tart with enough sweetness to taste the actual beer. Interesting and for a sour not bad.

2005 vintage courtesy of a beer savant no doubt. Pours mildly murky brown with gold edges and thin off white head. The aroma is Brett like sourness followed by un-ripe cherries and faint malt sweetness. The taste is refreshing to say the least with cherries moving into tartness and mild sourness. The tiny pulse of cherry fruity sweetness is but a brief murmur amid the tarter notes. It obviously ends dry and quenching and tears the palate clean. It isn’t an overwhelming tart bomb but allows other notes to come out and be heard.

Batch #8, 2007, bottle 0724, opened on 11/1/2008. Deep ruby/orange pour, loosely structured off white head that collapses quickly, leaving little lace. Complex aroma with cherries, caramel, earth, wood, leather, that all work well together. Medium body, very lightly carbonated, acidic with a very clean palate. Quite sour, but an underlying sweet fruitiness takes the edge off. The acidity and sourness brings a dry finish without bitterness. Very enjoyable combination of a clean and refreshing brew and a complexity of flavor and aroma.
