Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

2005 vintage courtesy of a beer savant no doubt. Pours mildly murky brown with gold edges and thin off white head. The aroma is Brett like sourness followed by un-ripe cherries and faint malt sweetness. The taste is refreshing to say the least with cherries moving into tartness and mild sourness. The tiny pulse of cherry fruity sweetness is but a brief murmur amid the tarter notes. It obviously ends dry and quenching and tears the palate clean. It isn’t an overwhelming tart bomb but allows other notes to come out and be heard.

Batch #8, 2007, bottle 0724, opened on 11/1/2008. Deep ruby/orange pour, loosely structured off white head that collapses quickly, leaving little lace. Complex aroma with cherries, caramel, earth, wood, leather, that all work well together. Medium body, very lightly carbonated, acidic with a very clean palate. Quite sour, but an underlying sweet fruitiness takes the edge off. The acidity and sourness brings a dry finish without bitterness. Very enjoyable combination of a clean and refreshing brew and a complexity of flavor and aroma.

courtesy of cigarcitybrew. ’05 bottle Pours hazy orange. Aroma is sour, hoppy and fruity. Taste, nice wood (oak barrel) flavors. Use of barrels give this beer definite fruit notes, very sour, not anything I would try again. Update: Tried a ’07 batch 8 bottle that was a lot less sour. This made the whole tasting experience a very enjoyable one.

2005 bottle. Crushed with Jakebra. Sourness big time, yes. Flavor isn’t as good as the aroma. Still plenty sour, but the flavor is like a combination of sweat, poop, and awesomeness. Still liked it for some reason.

Bottle from 2006. Pours a dark ruby with voluminous, pillowy, white head. The head collapses quickly. The aroma is of heavy sourness, oak, and a lot of vinuousness. Taste does not back this up. It is very mildly tart with an aftertaste of sweet tarts. Very not sour. Other tastes include quite a bit of cherry, some darker malt flavor, and definite oak with some hints of different kinds of alcohols. This one was somewhat disappointing for me.

2005 Vintage. Deep red in colour with fairly strong carbonation. Very earthy aromas, along with notes of cherry, flowers, and a bit of old wood. Flavor wise, there’s more mild cherry fruit, a hint of bready malts, and a dusty earthy quality. Powdery and drying mouthfeel, but still fairly heavy. Some sourness, but not as much as other sour reds that I’ve tried. Good stuff.

Bottle shared with piscator- thanks Kris! Pours a hazy off red with fluffy long lasting white head. Nose- very earthy, wood, light cherry. Taste- tart cherry, green apple, very dusty and earthy. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. Finishes thicker than most sours. Nice stuff

Pours out a light ruby color with thin off-white head and good amounts of lacing. Aroma is of tart fruit, must, light wood notes. Taste is tart fruit, must, vinuous flavors and mile wood notes. Moderate carbonation and full and balanced palate, this is a great sour.
