Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

[2005 Bottle. Enjoyed July 2007] Pours a swirl of orange and brown with a small white froth on top. Aroma of nailpolish and berries. Body is very light and airy... nice fizz without being bubbly. Perfect amount of sour in the flavor... just enough to make you pucker but not too much so that its crass. Excellent balance in a style that packs a punch!

Cracked in celebration of my 1 year RB anniversary! 2005 bottle - Nice cherry-red color pour with a medium head. Aroma is of sour fruits - cherry, apple, grape. Lots of oak and earthy notes detectable. Flavor was a pleasant sticky-sour - mostly cherry and oak, but some earth, grape, and wine thrown in there. Nice flavor with an impressive mouthfeel. Really nice - I’m definitely gonna age a few. Not quite Supplication though.

2006 Vintage. Dead flat. Vigorous pour yields about 6 big bubbles floating atop a deep red, almost brown liquid. Big oaky aroma, hints of sour cherries. BigHuge oaky flavor, as it warms it starts showing signs of a bone dry red wine. I really wanted to like a lot more than I did, but can I please just have maybe a hint of carbonation? Now I’m just kinda pissed I didn’t cellar this for a year or two.

750mL bottle (2005). First off, this is one of my favorite brews, and probably the most drinkable and not overly sweet or sour of the true Flemish sours. Pours a translucent blood-orange hue with a very nice off-white head and great lacing. Aroma is of red wine vinegar, sour cherries, oak, and a fruity sweetness that is not over the top. Flavor is quite tart, with sour cherries, lactic acid, and oak. This is a great brew.

0,75 l bottle form the brewery, 2007 vintage. This is one of three version of the same beer, and this is the sourest. As I type this a week after the tasting, the wonderful aroma gets back to me. It is amazing how the brewer has amanged to combine an almost vinegary sourness with a smooth and mellow beer. It balances ann extreme beer with an extremely likeable one! Lively carbonation. There is some fruitiness in this, sour cherries come to mind.

2005. Pours a clear copper-orange color with a thick white head. Tart and acidic on the nose, but a bit less aggressive than other Flemish Sours. Nice oak, apple, sour grape aromas come out as well. Taste is sour, but it isn’t an acidic gauntlet on the palate. This actually compliments the overall taste, as the slight tannic notes come out more towards the finish. Some cider-like qualities in the taste as well. A great beer.

750ml, 2005 vintage. pours dull amber with white head. nose has nice sour cherries, oak, sour and funky, but becomes a little anti-septic. flavor is rustic, oakys, cherry, slight anti-septic, slight sourness with good amount of acidity. a nice winey, acidic, and dry finish. i’ve had this twice and the first time i compared it side by side la folie which blew it away, and i’m sure supplication would do the same. yes it’s very tasty, but when compared to those greats it falls short in all areas. perhaps it could be a 4+ with more fruit and less medicinal notes, until then, i’ll have to get re-rating this thing.
