Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

The aroma is the craziest, most funky awesome thing ever. Like vanilla and sour fruit preserves. Taste is not quite as amazing, but pleasant and well integrated.

Aromas of barnyard and sour cherries. Flavors are much the same, although there is a good deal of sweetness that I was not expecting. This beer really is not my favorite style, although I can appreciate its complexity...

From a capped olive green 750 ml. bottle with a blurb on the back label, bottled in 2005, stored at cellar temperature and allowed to warm up a bit before sampling in a flute glass. Poured a clear reddish orange hued copper with a frothy, foamy beige head, good retention, fair amount of laced sticking. Aromas of tart, earthy, musty yeast and wood, some sweet berry fruitiness, lightly tannic, and herbal vinegary alcohol. Good tiny bubbly carbonation and a crisp, dry, creamy, sipping smooth medium-light bodied mouthfeel. Tastes of earthy, musty, spicy yeast, oak woody, sour cherries and sweet raspberries, a mild acidity one would associate with vinegar, a sour lactic vanilla that I associate with wood barrels, sharp alcohol bite, and dry yeasty, malty finish. I thought this was light on tartness and sourness, it was an easy sipper, pleasant on a mild spring day.

2006 bottle. Dark brownish red with a very thin loose bubbled reddish tan head. Earthy oaky aromas predominate with some vinous hints, herbal notes, definite lactobacillis. Dusty? Maybe some barnyard? A thin body, with low carbonation and perhaps just a touch of chalkiness, though not offensive in mouthfeel. The flavor is a bit gentler in the mouth than in the nose. Oaky, woody, maybe some copper. Earthy, more vinous and grapey than in the nose. Big tannins again, going towards the grape end of the wine spectrum. Perhaps a bit of a chalky taste even, though it might be psychosomatic. The lactobacillis character is a little more subtle. Sweet drinkable and a bit of dry fruit, more like Rodenbach Grand Cru than the smell suggested. Dry lactic acid finish, long woody aftertaste. For less cash, I’d buy more.

Bottle shared by Cameron at Coastal Wine. Poured flat and sheeny red; smooth and light-bodied. Bit sour, but even keeled. Doesn’t even approach a La Folie or the stronger Flemish sours ... this is actually drinkable for a non Flanders fan like me. Maybe a good introduction to the style. (#2835, 5/3/2007)

2006. pours a dark brownish red with no head. no lacing. sour, woody, horseblanket aroma. thin texture. notes of cherry, wood, and a hint of something chocolatey. i’m usually not a fan of these fruity sour beers but this one is different and special. it doesn’t make me pucker and turn my mouth inside out. instead, it goes down smooth with mellowed acidity(no heartburn!). very light carbonation adds to its smoothness. no aweful bacterial, green olive(horseblanket) flavors usually associated with most oak aged beers. a big fan.

2005 bottle. Pours a somewhat dark bloody maroon with an off white thin head. Smells of cherries, strawberries, and other fruits along with some acidity. Smells refreshing. Taste is sour, but nothing too cheek puckering. Seems to be the right amount for the flavors in this beer. Nice fruit, a little bit sweet and very full flavored. Pretty delicious, the finish was smooth and rich. This is one of my favorite flemish sours to drink.
