Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

Bottled 2006. Pours a clear dark amber with no head. Aroma of vinegar and sherry wine with some dark friut. Taste is fruity and slightly vinegary. Very thin mouthfeel. This is very refreshing and well worth the $22 I paid. The best Italy has to offer.

rerate same vintage years later. 750ml bottle, 2006 Vintage. Purchased at The Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondio, CA. Pours a brownish yellow wiht a bubly unstable head. The nose is strong, sweet and certainly sour. The taste is bold with lots of complexity and has a lot of great flavor and charm. This is a really tasty.

Bottle. 2006 Vintage. Ruby brown beer with a tiny off-white head. Tart, oaky aroma with some fruitiness. Tart, fruity (cherry, apple, grape) flavor with oak. Very smooth with lots of fruit and great tart balance. Dry finish has you wanting more. Alcohol well hidden.

2006 vintage. Mostly brown with some red hues. Zero head. Very little signs for carbonation. Aromas of some cherry, wood, and some lactic tartness. The flavor is decidedly woody and of course quite tart. Bone dry finish. No signs of carbonations through the entire beer. This isn’t really the WOW beer that I expected. Thanks to cdog69 for the bottle.

Bottle, 2006 edition. Pours reddish brown with practically no head. Aroma of cherries , apple peel, wine and wood. More cherries and wood in the taste, nice sour characteristic, not overpowering. Slightly acidic and not much carbonation, pretty smooth. Nice fruity taste, this is enjoyable.

Pours a deep glowing red with a brown murky mist about it. Fizzy bubbles form a giant head of pink, tan and cream colored hues. Lacing is thin fading away at a good clip. Aroma is very potent with notes of wine barrels and some vanilla tinged new oak, tart cherries, a little bit of farm fresh grassiness. Orange zest and cider apples make a brief appearance. Flavor is bold and awe inspiring. Nuances of expensive Bordeaux are crushed to oblivion by massive sour cherries and a barrage of oak barrel spiciness. Vanilla and creme brulee infused with cognac follow. On the back end feather soft carbonation leaves a tingling acidity on the tongue, just a beautiful climax to a near overwhelming sip of Italian nectar. As far as complexity goes, this holds high ranks with the likes of Mouton Rothschild and small village Junmai Dai-Ginjo. Palate is embracing and riveting altogether, with tartness, suppleness and radiating flavor all forming one of the most drinkable and refreshing beverages ever to pass these lips. Finishes strong and sweet/sour, but never too cloying or dry. This is certainly more well priced and accesible than the aforementioned rare wine or sake will ever be. For that, and astonishing flavor from Italy, a nation never included on a list of top beer producing countries, I commend Panil. Awesome drink, certainly the best Flemish style sour produced. Really takes Rodenbach to the mat, in the first round. Splendid. A masterpiece.

Bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar: Hazy redish amber color with just a wisp of foam. Aroma is wild berries, light red wine vinegar and a little oak. Flavor follows aroma with berries, black cherry, a light acidity, a touch of red wine, a hint of wood and a light dry finish. Light bodied and thin with little carbonation. Pricey.

Bottled in 2005 (750ml). Pours a hazy, very nice dark plum color, with a small head that fades away immediately. There’s a small ring that leaves behind a minimal lace. If it wasn’t for the color of this, it wouldn’t be that much to look at. On the second pour, which was a lot more aggressive, I was able to get a quarter inch head that disappeared just as quickly. Smell; sour apples, tart cherries, oak and mildly alcoholic. Some spices are present, such as cinnamon and pepper. Taste; as with the aroma lots of sour apples and tart cherries. The oak barrel flavor is very good, and there’s a definite acidic quality. There’s a touch of vinegar that kind of sits in the background, and this finishes with some mild spices and just a touch nutty. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with very little carbonation. As far as drinkability goes, I don’t think that I’ve ever come cross a beer as drinkable as this one. I love tart flavors, and this style is quickly becoming a favorite of mine, and so far this is the best I’ve yet had.
