Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

Thanks go to DougShoemaker for the chance to sample this delightful beer. Sour version from the 2005 vintage. Mahogany colour with amber highlights, topped by a finely-beaded head that collapses to a lasting ring around the edge of the glass leaving good lacing. Woody and fruity aroma has nice depth. There is a whiff of mustiness, with enigmatic notes of orange zest and preserved lemons underneath the more prominent sour cherry and oak. Soft, almost creamy, fruitiness up front with flavours of cherries and currants. Beautifully tart and dry finish that hits the back of the throat and lingers on the palate. A refined and contemplative beer that envelops you in its subtle and understated complexity.

Murky brown-red. No head at first until it warmed a bit and all the sudden a nice 1/4 inch creamy head and lace. Rich nose of juicy sour cherries, oak, bit of apple, hits of acid, vinegar and a bit of funk. Insane. Medium bodied, watery texture. Tart cherry flavors, oak, bit of wine, lemon zest, chocolate and other nuances all very well integrated. Not nearly as acidic as I thought but this is not a bad thing. Could be bit more meaty (or more carbonation to carry flavors better) for my tastes. Alcohol nowhere to be found, finish is very clean aside from a pleasantly light acetic note that hangs around. Killer stuff and drink at cellar, I drank a bit too cold but man, did it open up. Sexy. One to hunt.

Bottle labeled 2005. Pours murky faded copper/ rusty red color with a thin light tan bubbly head. Aroma is grapefruit, citrus, sour apple, dark fruit, earthiness, and malt. Flavor is immediately sour fruit, with yeasty, earthy notes, and a slightly bittering finish. Very well balanced.

Bottle 2005: At first pour its a reddish amber color with a thin but fluffy off white head. The aromas begin strong but fade soon after with the dominant aroma being sour green apples and a little oak. The flavor is sour, not pucker your lips sour, but sour apples and wood, wood, wood. The sourness covers the tongue, barely carbonated, and slips away to an oakiness that briefly lingers on the sides of my tongue. I’ve never tasted anything with quite so much oak and i love it.

kp’s Fest of 26. Two really good Flemish Sours in one night! Clear ruby brown with a lasting tan head. Fruity, tangy aroma. The flavor is intense – sour and dry. Tangy. Nice one!

Ahhh hell yeah beoches this was one awesome beer. A dark brown appearance. The flavor is quite sour and funky with a lot of tart cherries showing through. The finish is very sour with a hint of nutiness. Great freaking beer!

Reddish brown colour. Major oaky aroma, slight tart cherries. Bright, fruity, voluptuous. The flavour follows suit with lots of bright oakiness and deep cherry. Slightly creamy body. A mature, refined brew.
