Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

Bottle. Cloudy reddish brown in colour. Tastes of dark fruits and is also sour and vinegar like in flavour. Nice dryness and oakyness. Notes of sherry.

Bottle. Sour aroma like a Flemish sour (it is a Flemish sour, so go figure). A lot darker than most Flem Sours. Small, off-white head. Beautiful color; no lace. Very sour. Why is this brew rated so highly? How is this brew so superior to other sour beers? Top 50? Very good for a Flemish Sour, but as a style, I’m still not getting it. Is this more of a Sour Brown?

750 ml bottle - thanks to Footbalm for the trade! Pours a dark reddish mahogany color, slightly hazy witha foamy beiigey head. Aroma is somewhat funky, dry red wine, sour fruits, wet wool and astringent. Flavor is sour, tart, raspberry and cherry, earthy, woody and vinuous. Medium body, tingly carbonation. This Flemish Sour was delicious!

I expected a lot from this ale but was a little dissapointed. Good sourness at first but fades too quickly. overall pretty good but I wanted the tartness to linger longer

750ml bottle. The aroma is what I expected from a good sour ale, but the flavor was a little lacking. Very good upfront sourness on the tip of the tongue, but it seems to fade too fast. I will try this again, but right now, I would put Monk’s Flemish over this one.

750ml bottle via my Christmas in July Secret Santa - Thanks Mullman! - Pours deep copper in color with a short creamy tan head that didn’t stay too long. Aromas of sour cherries, bannana, and just a touch of vinegar. Flavor is an interesting blend of sour cherries, caramel malts, chocolate, roasted malts, and a touch of vinegar. Also some raisin, and some definite oak flavor in there as well. Palate seems almost buttery and soft. Carbonated pretty well but not overly so. Quite a complex and interesting brew.

Big thanks to Kramer17801 for this one in a trade! 750 ml bottle: Orangey/reddish copper w/ a short lived off white head. Initial aroma out of the bottle is sour, over ripe, bananas, as well as brett and catty aromas. Oak barrel aging is apparent but not overwhelming. Some earthy and band aid plastic notes as well. Lighlty toasty malt and a hint of caramel work their way in as it warms as well as a bit of sour cherries for some reason. Starts off sour and finishes tart. Toasty malt balances well to keep it from being mouth puckeringly sour. Earthy hop notes with toasted malt and a bit of a vinegary finish & aftertaste. Woody notes in the mid palate as well as well as a bit of alcohol with some hints of sour raisins & cherries. Medium carbonation, lighter medium body, well hidden alcohol in the mouth. Fairly smooth. Sour beers are still not my "cup of tea" but it’s not overwhelmingly sour and might be a good summertime refresher.
