Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

750 mL bottle, 2005 vintage. Pours a bright ruby red with a creamy off-white head that fades to nothing within a minute. Moderate visible carbonation and lots of fine sediment in the bottle. Lightly sour aroma with a marriage of fruity essences, especially sour cherry, and a barrel aged oakiness. Dry and dusty with a little hint of Brett. Flavor has just the right amount of sourness and acidity for me. Very vinous and multi-faceted. Lots of sour cherry, cherry pits, and plums. Finish is crisp and very refreshing. Rather surprised to see that this is 8% ABV as I have a hard time even picking up the alcohol. Fairly light bodied and thin with low but lively carbonation that dances across the tongue and refreshes the palate for each consecutive sip. A really great beer in my book. Refreshing, with enough complexity to make it worthy of a two hour session from one bottle. Each sip just encouraged another and another till the end.

Aroma is vinegar, sour cherries and tart fruits. Reddish brown in color with thumb thick tan head. Fore is quite sour and musty and is followed quickly by tart cherries and unripe apple, strong notes of those baby corns, used in Oriental cooking, stewed in cooking wine. Wood notes pop out in the middle along with musty barnyard notes. Finish is sour and dry and leaves the tongue feeling cleansed. I personally feel this would have benefited by a little more sweetness beneath the sour notes as it hints at it and that promise is enticing, but undelivered.

This is a masterpiece and one of the best sour beers as I am ranking to style. The reddish colour is awesome. The aroma is alcoholic is best I can say. It is very easy drinking, not thick which I liked and is dangerously easy to finish. It is complex with cognac, woody, avnilla, sour cherry. Because of the sourness this is not for everybody.

MN Winter Get Together, 2005: Mucho props to Hellomynameis who brought this to the party! Brown color with no head. Good sour malt aroma with a little cherry. Big malt body with an odd addition of wheat in there. Sourness is there with just a bit of cherry, as well as a good rounding out of oak. A little honey on the finish. I’m getting addicted to this style.

Thanks to Hellomynameis for bringing the highlight of the Twin Cities ’06 winter get together. This beer is outstanding in every way. One of the best aromas I have ever found in a beer. It is sour, but below that is yeast and lambic-like barnyard as well as sweet fruit. The flavor has sweet and sour elements. The sweet is very fruit, which Flemish sours can be, but rather than stopping there it has sourness as well. It completely hides the alcohol and goes down easily and soft on the palate.

Straight from my notes: Sour aroma, but so tempting. Dark brown colour with nice looking head. Wood flavours mixed up in some tart fruits with overtones of sour. Mediuem body that went down well. I was glad to be able to share this bottle with the rest of the MN beer geeks.

750 ml bottle shared by jerc. Hazy red brown colour with a fully diminishing off-white head. Fruity, sour, dry dusty, yeasty, leathery, oak, and cherry aroma. Fruity, acidic, dusty, yeasty, cheesy, woody, and oaky flavours with a strangely light but assertive bitterness. Light bodied, dry but refreshing and quenching. Good stuff - thanks for picking this one up Jer.
