Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

Chocolatey brown color with red tints and nearly no head. Aroma of dust, brown sugar, grapes and vinegar. Light vinegar flavor, a bit dry and dusty. Not overly acidic like Rodenbach GC or La Folie, more tart than sour. There is a slight balancing sweetness in the finish. Very nice.

Big wine beer. Taste is bitter and fruity, but the nose is fantastic, nebbiolo and sour. Glad I finally had this one.

Bottle purchases at the Corkscrew, Urbana. Poured with some apple spice tea bread that made for a nice pairing. Very low carbonation, to the point where I thought I had sampled a bad bottle, although a second bottle revealed the same. Flavors of apple cinammon, nutmeg, lots of clove, brown sugar, molasses, and vanilla. Certainly sour and pervasively earthy with a warming alcohol finish. A bit more carbonation would be appreciated to draw out the flavors. RERATE: Another bottle, and I’m still annoyed by how little carbonation is in the beer. Flat.

Bottle. Pours a deep reddish brown with a neglitiable head. Scents of vinegar and wood on the nose. Although sour to taste, it tastes like an oaked port that has had acidity introduced. Very disappointing for the result as well as the amount wasted on the cost of the bottle.

Sour cherry aroma...yeasty, mouth-puckering...Beautiful-looking with a dark body and slight bright white head. Very low carbonation, which I appreciate in a Flemish Sour Ale, and it’s very wine-like. The flavor is tart, and not sweet at all, leaving one to taste the true flavor of the fruits. Something musty and cellar-like qualtiy to it.

Dark reddish-brown color, with very minimal carbonation and a small tan lace - not a very sour aroma at all, almost sweet, actually - a bit of must and brett, chocolate and cherries, even a bit of toffee - flavor is not nearly as mouth puckering as others in the style, esp. Rodenbach Grand Cru, but in some ways that makes this beer better, because you can more easily appreciate the other flavors the beer has to offer - lots of oak and red wine qualities - chocolate, plum, fig - a hint of smoke and ash - earthy, very - extremely dry, but warming finish - perhaps my favorite of the style so far.

750. Pours a very murky deep brown color with very little to no head, more of a film than anything. Really nice aroma, oaky, tart, some sour cherry. Flavors are muted domewhat from the fairly lifeless body. Literally tons of wood in the flavor, somewhat sour but not much at all, very earthy. Body seems watery, extremely little carbonation, some acidity, raw dryness. Something just seems to missing to give it that good, mouth-puckering zip that you find with something like Rodenbach or Goudenband. Hmpf, I’m a bit disappointed.

A very dark red, majogony wood color and very clear with a tight-bubbled, tan head. Small bubbles rise continuosly from the bottom of the glass. Aroma is a very pleasant balsamic vinegar and not the nosehair follicle destroying white vinegar and is balanced by a nice sweetness, milk, and toast. There is a great deal of sourness in the flavor. It is almost mouthpuckering at first drink especially when combined with the additional tannic dryness from the wood that almost coats the palate. The kind of vinegar is nice but the soft wood character distracts me and overdominates with its astringent, mouthcoating residue that recedes in intensity as it warms. Overall, a very nice sour red, better than most..
