chriso (4667), London, Greater London, England Oct 27, 2009 Bottle, April 2008 tasting. Very cloudy appearance - obviously I’d expect a Belgian style Wit to be hazy but this was more sludgy. Despite Phil L’s protestations, I didn’t really find anything to suggest that this was over the hill. I would probably expect more spice and less farmyard funk from a Wit, but funk isn’t a problem for me (even if it is not supposed to be there). Not as arresting or distinctive as some of Panil’s other offerings but interesting, and certainly not unpleasant, nonetheless.
Bov (5403), Bienne, Switzerland Aug 27, 2009 courtesy of fiulijn - pours a cloudy lactic-orange colour under a persistent white foam; fair but not overwhelming aroma of orange peels and coriander; robust but subtle carbonation, some sweetness balanced by a tart acidity, thin to medium malt backbone; very dry and fizzy finish with notes of coriander and citrus - subtle and refreshing DruncanVeasey (2690), The Penguin’s Arms, Europe, Warwickshire, England Aug 9, 2009 Handsome foiled bottle from Enoteca Bonatti. Thick uneven snowdrift head over full apricot haze. Immediately Belgian funk, farmyard and sweet manure aroma with cutting lemon and lily- more saison or Westy blond than witbier. Lemony funky edge, encloaking lily, pig crap, lemon barley, honey dabbed biscuits and cereals, wheat, sickbowl floaties, barrels. Pleasant and characterful. ricksivrea (10), Ivrea, Italy Jan 17, 2009 Ottima birra bianca, con schiuma corposa, bianca e persistente.
Aroma con sentori di limone e leggermente acidulo
Great Yellow Blanche, with a thick creamy white head. Citrus aroma. Lubiere (4463), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Dec 6, 2008 A pale yellow blanche with a thick creamy white head. A pleasant citrus and catnip aroma, homebrew like, but good. In mouth, a crisp catnip wit with light banana notes, a bit muddy, light wild fermentation. Not bad. Bieropholie import, bottle is about 1 year old. Ungstrup (14754), Frederiksberg, Denmark Oct 5, 2008 Bottled. A hazy light golden beer with a lazing white head. The aroma is sweet with citrusy and dusty notes of hops. The flavor is sweet citrusy with a light note of acidity, leading to a dry bitter and citrusy finish. harrisoni (6703), Ashford, Kent, England Apr 25, 2008 Bottle at Chris o’s The Wolf tasting. Phil l said it was probably too old to get a rating out of it. To me it had the same problem as some of the other Panil beers. Yes it has some decent sourness, but they really do have to stop putting several hundred yards of wooden fencing in the copper when they do their boil!!!! At least there wasn’t any creosote on this one. MesandSim (5790), London, Greater London, England Apr 24, 2008 A Mes rate: Bottle at Chris O’s Ha Ha Ha Ha Gimme the Cheese Tasting. Phil claimed this wasn’t rateable. I pointed out he obviously doesn’t know us very well... :) Blanche appearance with a thin white head. Minty aroma with that usual hint of enjoyable Panil infected funk. Similar flavour and as Ian so rightly pointed out, "it’s got a bit of fence in it."
