Bockyhorsey (2020), Mesa, Arizona, USA Sep 28, 2008 Tap @ Papago. Good smokey wood and coffee aromas. Black body with big creamy head. Lacing is left all over glass. Sweet chalky banana fruit flavor along with some roast and dry coco mix. Sweetness of beer lingers on the palate. Good brew. FlacoAlto (2142), Tucson, Arizona, USA Sep 23, 2008 Sampled on tap at Papago, September 2008
Arrives from the tap with a frothy, pale browned, tan colored head. The beer is a dark brown color with a light haze to it. This has quite the weird aroma to it; a mix of toasted bread notes, some weird breakfast cereal type thing, some phenolic plastic aromatics that almost are smoky. The aroma is just really funky and it is hard to describe how weird it really is.

The flavors are sharp and roasted with a bitter, burnt grain note. This has a light tartness to it, though not like that from an infection or wild-bugs. This has an amply toasted, whole grain bread flavor to it as well as some light, breakfast-roast coffee notes; this last even provides a touch of burnt acidity. Thee is a slight fruitiness to this beer that reminds me of a sort of tart, burnt plum flavor that does not quite reach prune in concentration. The flavor is not as weird as the aroma would suggest, but this still seems a bit of a sloppy brew overall. SuperDave70 (822), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA Aug 30, 2008 On tap at Papago. Dark brown body with a huge creamy tan head that lasts throughout the glass. It’s a beautiful thing to behold in the curvy weizen glass. Aroma of dark roasted grain, nuts, coffee, and hints of light fruit fighting their way through. Flavor is very similar, a super-roasty hefe that still holds on to the normal characteristics of a good wheat brew. Medium bodied, and lingering nutty coffee on the finish. I enjoyed it! ajm (369), California, USA Aug 5, 2008 Tap at Pap, and I wish I could rank this higher. Jet black body. The head is the second-most interesting part: it stands nearly two inches high and looks like it was rolled in dust. This is foreshadowing, if you think charcoal dust. The bulk of the body tastes straight-up burnt. Not like Ola Dubh or a Schlenkerla Rauchbier - those are very smokey, but not even this burnt. This is a Hef that someone put on the grill and then fell asleep burnt. STILL retains refreshment, which I was floored by. nbutler11 (208), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jul 3, 2008 Much like a porter in appearance, yet it’s taste is certainly unique--not for the supposed banana flavor that the description lists, but for the roasted hazlenut that’s readily apparent in it’s finish.
