Re-Rate 01/18/02: While I no longer feel Paulaner is worth a ’Perfect 5’, I still rank it in the top 5 on my master list of Hefe’s. Pours a cloudy orange color, nice white head and generous lace. Nose is malt, wheat, citrus, clean and fresh. Front is malt sweet, the middle light, fresh, the finish dry, acidic, moderate carbonation and a bit dry with a nice hop presence to finish it off.

Very Good! Don’t ruin it with a lemon twist.

A great hefeweizen! Cloudy, opaque gold; lots of fizz with a durable fluffy white head; a bouquet of great aromas (clove, banana, vanilla and yeast). Yeasty/bready flavor but real clean and fresh. Loads of flavors, but very refreshing and satisfying on a hot day. A little touch of lemon twist is nice.

The archetypal German hefe-weizen for me. It’s really everything a wheat should be. It’s not as exotic or as expensive as some, it makes a great consistent hefe-weizen, though. Banana and clove, good old German yeast.

Re-rate: 9-28-02. Great beer. A lot better than the first bottle I tried. Slightly better than Franziskaner but not quite as satisfying as Weihnenstephaner.

Wonderful aroma. Banana is particularly strong, some cloves, and a bit of citrus. Light hops and wheat. Cloudy (unfilt.) golden dark amber with creamy, off-white lacing head. Palate is ligh-medium watery with gentle carbonation. Starts sweet with wheat and banana, citrus. Light acidity kicks in for a weaker sweet finish. After is bready and a bit sweet, with a pleasant level of acidity and low bitterness. Fruity.

Nice, wheaty, yeasty aroma. Excellent lace. White head, cloudy orange body. A very good weissbier.
