Commercial Description:
When the Original Münchner was brewed for the first time at the end of the 19th Century, it was a spectacular success. With its hoppy taste, subtle, light and elegant, it becomes ever popular. Today the Paulaner Original Münchner is the best sold Münchner Hellbier (lager beer) in the world and Paulaner's No. 1 export beer in over 30 countries with its wonderfully subtle, spicy, naturally hearty taste.

Grassy, straw-like, pilsner malt nose with a cooked vegetable and lemon tea-like quality, not at all appealing; very sweet up front and a lame, noble hop vague bitterness; smooth palate; better than kool-aid.

Bottle: Aroma is light with hints of sweetness, grass, and hops. Pours a transparent gold with a small white head that diminishes quickly. Lightly sweet up front with an even lighter sourness that lasts up to a light hop finish. Refreshing and easy drinking on a hot day like today , but nothing special.

(Bottle 50 cl) Abroad Paulaner may best be known for it’s range of wheat-beers. But there’s much more to this brewery. Very pale with a lovely, creamy head. Sweet malty presence in both nose and flavour and an almost overwhelming softness. An excellent beer reminding me of some of the best Czech pilseners. 210899

Bottled. A pale greeny coloured lager. The aroma is sweet and a bit tinny. The taste is also sweet and a bit flowery and sickly. Not really very special.Score 1.9

Bottle into kolsch glass, Edelweiss German Restaurant, Bellevue NE. Bright clear yellow in the glass with a bright white head. Sticky, dense lacing with quick but deep sub-surface racing. Smell of wheat, bread, and noble hops. Light malt flavor, softly sugary like powdered sugar. Hoppy finish as advertised, with musty malt and prickly hop acidity, almost dry. Smooth and drinkable, light and subtle, this was enjoyable overall.

This was from a bottle. It poured a sparkling golden liquid with a one inch rocky white head that dissipated quickly leaving nice lacing on the glass. The aromas were subtle but primarily malt with some notes of grass and earth. The mouthfeel was a little watery and the flavor was of malt balanced nicely with just a bit of hop bitterness. The finish was a bit thin and disappeared too soon.

Tasted from the bottle and expecting a lot as it was advertised as a Völlbier (full). Pours a brilliant pale gold with a short soapy white head. Sweet honey and grainy malt aroma with a background of grassy hops. Sweet palate, very light bodied and medium in carbonation. Flavours of grain husks, light honey front and a grassy bitter side, made for a sessionable but not ’braggable’ bog standard Lager. Knowing the history of this brewery, I did expect more.
