Roasted-malty, slightly sour and sweetish aroma with some cherry tartness. Sweetish-caramely-roasty-malty, lightly vinegary-tart flavor with some starch, and a hint of ashiness in the finish. Medium-bodied, sweetish but not very sugary palate with smooth-n-foamy carbonation. Now this is an Oud Bruin I could actually enjoy drinking. It leans quite a bit towards the Flemish Sour Ales - without quite being a substitute for them, though. Anyway, much more enjoyable as a beer than the Leroy Special Katje. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 14, 2007 25 cl bottle: Nice big fluffy beige mousse that lasts a little longer than on most Oud Bruins. Immediate aroma of caramel malt, fresh plums, wood, vinous notes, and raisin, all wrapped up in lactic acid and tied with a musty bow. Body seems a bit thick and sticky for the style but by no means is it syrupy. Tart summer berries and yellow raisins float in the caramel and honey sweetness. There is a malt backbone which adds some complexity but none of this lasts long on the tongue. It quickly rolls back over your tongue leaving you with some watered down light cider vinegar and rasin sweetness. Bart (1636), Brussels, Belgium
