Commercial Description:
Grand Cru de Pelican is the result of inspiration, creativity, and imagination. With a nod to the great brewing traditions of Belgium, we have been inspired to create this dark, sensous brew. Grand Cru de Pelican entices with a rich, complex aroma, and satisfies with deep malty and caramel flavors. Spicy, aromatic flavors provide a harmonious counterpoint to the malty foundation of this robust beer. A snappy finish and medium-light body enhance the smooth drinkability of this beer.

Bottle shared at the Oak Cafe by Pailhead, I think...Deep reddish brown body with a decent brown head. Quite the aroma--with notes of caramel, spices, brown sugar and raisins all melding together. The taste is much the same and very big and bold in presentation. This is thick and syrupy, and fairly sweet as well. Enjoyable brew for sure.

Bottle shared at Oak Cafe: Pours a clear copper color with a medium tan head. Aroma, fruits, caramel and some toffee. Flavor, sweet and malty, some caramel, spices, and some yeasty notes.

(750ml Bottle, 2007 vintage) Pours a mahogany body with a medium beige head. Aroma of molasses, toasted marshmallow, vanilla, caramel, nuts, and figs. Flavor of plum, raisins, molasses, banana, and burnt caramel. Like a rich dessert at a fine restaurant. I sure hope Pelican brews this again.

Bottle... This beer rocks!... Mostly clear, very dark, crimson ale with a large, frothy, beige head. Good, not great, retention. The nose is a malty marriage of caramel syrup, yellow and chocolate cake batter and dark raisins. That aroma and the following flavor are both rich as hell! Good, chocolaty, burnt bitterness. Sweet, warm caramel, dark fruits and molasses. Full-bodied with spritzy carbonation. Crisp, mildly sweet, medium burnt finish. I’m officially a big fan of this brewery. Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this world class brew!

2007. If Alesmith brewed their interpretation of this recipe, I’d buy 3 cases tomorrow, this is fantastic. Slight haze surrounds an opaque, blood red pour. A tan head is mid-sized and dissapears all too quickly. Strong caramel malt pungency and wintery spices adorn the forward motion that is the initial aromatic oscillation. Moderate sugar and notes of raisin, fig, juicy plum, damp brown sugar and chocolate follow. This is ripe and provacative. Blackstrap molasses is scattered about in thick and tarry currents. What an enchanting and uber-rich nose this has! The flavor is very decadent! Incredibly rich dark fruits encompass the body and squirt their nectar into every waiting corner of the mouth. Sweetness is very high but never nears cloying, it’s just a syrupy, fruity dessert in liquified form. Bitterness is low but noted. Acidity is the same. Near nil astringency. Chocolate and caramel flow freely. The finish is sweet and smooth with low to mild acidity and effortless enjoyment even if it’s far from quenching. The mouthfeel is full bodied with adequate and sometimes punchy and erratic carbonation. Very, very good and equally as surprising. This would be tremendous atop the right ice cream - I suppose some experimentation is in order.

Pours what at first appears to be a deep chestnut, but under the light reveals a ruby red glint. Aroma is molasses, raisins, cardamom and candied fruits. Flavor is sweet, but is countered nicely with a roasted bitterness. Very nice.

750 ml bottle; packaged 01/07. Aroma of sweet dark fruits, roasted malt, and a little yeast/spice. In strong light the color is deep ruby, with enticing bubbles, and a beige head that flattened rather soon. Arguably more than medium bodied, crudely creamy carbonation, and a hit of dark sugars and dark fruits that is nigh overwhelming. Some of it is plummy, some is caramel. The finish is dryer than might be expected, and there is a strong impression on the top of the tongue. Seems spicey or peppery. Not finding a lot of bitter, but this is complex enough that it is not really missed. Most excellent.

From a 750mL Bottle. Mostly transparent, ruddy amber colored pour with a big head of fizzy tan. Loads of banana, leather, and chewy chocolate fudge truffle create an enticing dessert-like bouquet. Medium bodied, crisply carbonated mouthfeel. Enough texture to keep it from feeling thin, while keeping a true-to-style level of carbonation at the same time. Sweet caramel flavors with lots of seared raisins. Chewy and juicy chocolate malts with a hefty banana fruitiness and clove spiciness left in the final smack.
