Commercial Description:
Grand Cru de Pelican is the result of inspiration, creativity, and imagination. With a nod to the great brewing traditions of Belgium, we have been inspired to create this dark, sensous brew. Grand Cru de Pelican entices with a rich, complex aroma, and satisfies with deep malty and caramel flavors. Spicy, aromatic flavors provide a harmonious counterpoint to the malty foundation of this robust beer. A snappy finish and medium-light body enhance the smooth drinkability of this beer.

Many thanks to Bob for bringing this to DLD! Poured thick, deep brown with a fine cap of tan head. The aroma picked up rich, dark plums and other fruits on a warm, inviting initial impression.. touches of oak and peppery yeast joined and were perfectly balanced. The flavor found semi-sweet dark fruits and a pinch of oak with heavier vinous character coming through on the back.. again, balance was spot-on! Heavier-bodied and warm on the palate with ideal flow to it.. I would LOVE to try this again!

Bottled Jan ’07. Beer is clear, medium/dark brown with a small, off-white, frothy, mostly diminishing head.
The aroma is bready and rich. Malty with light notes of toasted bread crust, light caramel, buttery shortbread; Hoppy with light herbal resin/pine; Yeasty with light notes of fresh bread; Light spicy alcohol, juicy dried current.
The flavor is equally rich. Moderately/heavily sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter with a long, warm, moderately bittersweet finish.
The body is medium/full, the texture is velvety and the carbonation is lively.
Really really pleasing.

750 ml bottle; packaged 01/07. Aroma of sweet dark fruits, roasted malt, and a little yeast/spice. In strong light the color is deep ruby, with enticing bubbles, and a beige head that flattened rather soon. Arguably more than medium bodied, crudely creamy carbonation, and a hit of dark sugars and dark fruits that is nigh overwhelming. Some of it is plummy, some is caramel. The finish is dryer than might be expected, and there is a strong impression on the top of the tongue. Seems spicey or peppery. Not finding a lot of bitter, but this is complex enough that it is not really missed. Most excellent.

Bottle... This beer rocks!... Mostly clear, very dark, crimson ale with a large, frothy, beige head. Good, not great, retention. The nose is a malty marriage of caramel syrup, yellow and chocolate cake batter and dark raisins. That aroma and the following flavor are both rich as hell! Good, chocolaty, burnt bitterness. Sweet, warm caramel, dark fruits and molasses. Full-bodied with spritzy carbonation. Crisp, mildly sweet, medium burnt finish. I’m officially a big fan of this brewery. Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this world class brew!

From a corked 750, January 2007 bottling: Nice package, fairly long cork was a little bit of work to extract but it gave a satisfying pop as it exited(why do I feel funny after writing that? hmmmm...). Dark reddish brown to burgundy, dark tan’brown foam leaves some lace. Nice toffee aroma with some evergreen hop, subdued; Very nice caremelized (not burnt) sugar flavors intertwine nicely with English hops and a nice dry finish. A little spicy/peppery in the aftertaste. Really nice effort, will be interesting to see how it ages.

(750ml Bottle, 2007 vintage) Pours a mahogany body with a medium beige head. Aroma of molasses, toasted marshmallow, vanilla, caramel, nuts, and figs. Flavor of plum, raisins, molasses, banana, and burnt caramel. Like a rich dessert at a fine restaurant. I sure hope Pelican brews this again.

A 2007 vintage 750 ml bottle, purchased this beauty from Pelican Pub mail order and shared at Dark Lord Day ’09. Pours a semi-hazy dark brown colored brew with a nice tan head that slowly dissipates and leaves behind some excellent lacing. Aroma is complex with roasted caramel malt, chocolate, raisins, orange zest and dark pitted fruits. Taste is full bodied, a tad syrupy with flavors of caramel malt, flowery hops, some dried figs, apricot, raisins and dark pitted fruits. Finish is semi-sweet, fruity with some alcohol warmth presence. The two years of aging has done some wonders to this Quad.

Brown-amber with a bubbly brown head. From first pour, it is evident that this diverges sharply from the usual style. Brown-sugar and molasses strike the nose first. Honts of aged wood and sour cherry notes waft in. Richly flavorful, medium-bodied mouthfeel with multifacted palate of marsala notes, figs and then a caramel and chocolate-cherry finish. Wonderful melody of aromas and flavors lap over the senses. Depths of figs and brown sugar continue to reveal themselves. Sweet sugar-fig finish.
