TheEpeeist (1424), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 14, 2006 22 oz bottle. Not quite clear orange with a bit of lacy white head. Orange blossom and butterscotch. Creamy carb, candied orange peel, brown sugar. Mild pith bitterness. Fine stuff. Just on the sweet side but hops still shine. tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 13, 2006 2005 Vintage bottle shared with Hogtown Harry, his bottle via Blankboy. Deep orange, big fluffy orange tinted head. Strong aroma of malt, resiny hops. Very rich, but not too in your face. Strong hops in taste, very very spicy and peppery. Lots of citrus along with substantial malt body and a touch of alcohol. Very spicy alcohol burn in the finish - very long finish. Quite balanced really, and as it heats up, you’d almost think it was a IIPA, as it is quite assertive. Just a little too much burn as it sits, otherwise, extremely good. HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Oct 11, 2006 Bottle (650ml) 2005 vintage. Shared with tupalev, bottle from blankboy. Poured ever so slightly hazy orange-amber with a huge fluffy-rocky off-white lasting head. Aroma of citrus/herbal/floral/ hops, with tea, very light malt, yeast ... intersting - I’d sniff and think "whoa! hoppy" but it would get mild immediately on repeated sniffs. Flavour - oh, my nice and sophisticated, the hops really have levelled out - initially a balanced interplay of citrus/herbal hops and juicy sweetish malt, then the resin/grapefruit pith bitterness kicks in and dominates through a long hoppy finish - great stuff. Decent body to it too, solid astringency, mild carbonation, a long bitter linger, clean and just what you want from a west coast IPA - this is, in fact, very close to an imperial IPA - excellent, thanks Paul! DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 6, 2006 Bottle from Brock Landers. Deep golden pour with huge, fluffy head. Aroma of huge piney hops, tropical fruit. The flavor is hoppy, very fruity, with a solid caramel malty backbone. Yeah, this one does get a little hot, but I didn’t notice it until the very end. Worth seeking out! BuckeyeBoy (1635), Boise, Idaho, USA Oct 5, 2006 On tap at Pelican Pub & Brewery Pacific City OR. Pours out a Very nice copper topped with a off white head. A Great Hop aroma. A nice floral aroma as well. TURDFERGUSON (1594), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA Oct 2, 2006 22ouncer courtesy of KenB. Yum. My favorite IPA that Ive tasted is Racer 5, and this stuff is equally good. Nose is familiar-floral hops, a little fruit, sweet malt. intense hop flavor that balances well with cirtus accents and a light yet present malt backbone. in other words, great balance. My new favorite session ipa. But I cant get it in NC, or Racer 5. :( OldMrCrow (1179), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 30, 2006 Updated: Jul 10, 2007Tap at Uber 9/30/06.
I’ve wanted to try this beer for over a year, and I’m not disappointed! This is really good stuff. It pours a beautiful clear copper with a lovely and long lived whipped-butter color head. The aroma is spectacular (at risk of a synesthesial metaphor): powerful with marvellous nectarine and floral hop aromas that somehow avoid all of the astringent aspects of other strongly hopped aromas while at the same offering an incredibly rich strong nose. The flavor is also good but it can’t quite keep up with the aroma; it begins with some herbal tones and sweet fruit juices; through the middle we get mildly sweet malts strong enoug to balance the whole thing out, along with the expected citric hop flavors.
This one lived up to my very high expectations, and I look forward to my next chance to try it.
Bottle 7/9/07. As before, astonishing aroma - rich sweet pineapple juice and nectarine, incredibly full, very close to a 10. Flavor is good, relatively dry given the sweet aroma, but short on the malt backbone. Original numbers stand. kenb (1100), Oregon, USA Sep 20, 2006 Updated: Aug 7, 200722 OZ Bottle from the Pelican Brewery at the beach. Pours a clear copper color with a large head that leaves a lof of lace as it slowly dissipates.Nice hoppy aroma with notes of orange, grapefruit, lemon, butterscotch, and subtle caramel malt backbone. Medium bodied and carbonated just right. Starts out with a sweet caramel/molasses flavor, then turns to a strong orange and finishes with a hoppy bitter grapefruit mouth-puckering bitter. Just very nice and makes me smile. The cascade hops are barely kept in check here! Actually, no they aren’t, lol..does have the bitter grapefruit rind finish..
