Corked and caged. Opens with loud pop. Pour is mostly clear brown ruby with a one inch off white head. Some lacing. Aroma of sour black cherry, caramel maltiness behind that. The fruit aroma is a bit dusty smelling. The sour fades quick, leaving behind mostly the sweetish malt aroma. Some nice Dandelion floral notes are also present. Taste is the sour cherry of the nose, mixed with caramel and honey sweetness. Taste is mostly about the malt, with tart sour highlights. There is a nice grassy mineral flavor at the finish. Some woodiness present. Same caramelly malt as in the Pelican Bier de Garde. The slight dusty cardboard is also present, mostly in the longish finish. Palate is medium, highly carbonated nice and smooth. Nice one. WeeHeavySD (3041), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA

Spiced aroma that was fruity and with a lot of esters. Soft, subtly carbonated palate. Fruity with plums and/or raisins. Lots of brown sugars with pretty much no bitterness. Highly drinkable and approachable. Spiced like cinnamon or nutmeg. after4ever (2828), Brier, Washington, USA

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 19, 2008 Courtesy of Skyview. Murky brown color with no head. Aroma is malty, but reminded me a bit of Lysol. Ditto on the taste. Very light malt with an odd spice burn that was not good. Syrupy. Skyview (4095), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 10, 2008 Picked up a 750 ml, 2007 vintage bottle from Pelican Pub delivery. Pours a semi-clear dark copper amber brew with a fast dissolving beige head that dissipates to a thin ring. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, a touch of raisin, yeast, some dark pitted fruits, and brown sugar. Taste is medium bodied, some carbonation with flavors of caramel malt, dried tropical fruit, some candi sugar, yeast, and a touch of apple. Finish is semi-sweet some alcohol presence the a mild tart bitterness that slowly disappears. A solid Belgian dark ale over all. beerinmarch (2829), Washington, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 29, 2008 Updated: Mar 19, 2009On tap at Baileys. This was a much better representation of this beer. Good carbonation really brings out the yeast character, big banana character, milder on the clove. Pretty nice overall when it has some carbonation, although it still tastes more in the realm of a German doppelbock with all the banana.
Green Dragon meet the brewer night. I didn’t jive much on this beer, very flat and lifeless. Even on tap this just didn’t have much carbonation leaving to a very heavy body and no spiciness to it. Heavy caramel and dark fruit character, overly sweet. kmweaver (2498), Sebastopol, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 18, 2008 Draft @ Pelican. Pours a dark, clear amber color; light-tan head with good retention and fine-bubbled lacing. Loads of dried dark fruits, Belgian sugars, and pleasant esters in the aroma; carefully sweet. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: lots of brown sugar (soft), dried dark fruits (dates, raisins), and complex Belgian character; again, the core is generous without being sticky; nicely done strong Belgian. Lengthy finish: dried dark fruits, light mineral bitterness; balanced end.
