The aroma is rich and malty, caramel, rye bread and hops. So is the taste, light alcoholic. Full body with a dry alcoholic finish. Great !!! Schroppfy (1813), Ohio, USA

This is a malt monster in the extreme, dripping with alcoholic caramel sweetness, an absolutely stretchy concoction, with intense spun brown sugar. If it was warmer bees and ants would be swarming. This is a diabetic’s nightmare - but in a good way. Lordy, lordy, is this incredible in the English toffee flavor!
However, there is a slight hoppiness; not of your normal pine, cirtrus, rind bitterness variety but subtler, more integrated, spicier and more flowery.
I started this at over 60 deg, and it had this gorgeous head, multicolored tan and lighter off-white. Now the head is minimal, and the beer is still and a bit heavy. The alcohol is huge, but handleable (well, maybe not - might have to ask the wife for help...). I rarely am able to savor a malt masterpiece such as this. Highly recommended. hophead75 (1962), Boonton, New Jersey, USA

Aroma of alot of molasses, dark fruit, and lightly yeasty. Taste is alot of caramel/molasses, sherry- plums and raisins, nice and full bodied and relatively smooth, some light bready yeast. Finishes with lingering fruit, caramel sweetness, and a light to moderate hop bitterness. So far this one is aging extremely well. One of the highlights for me at the tasting, thanks Larry! | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 30, 2007 Picked up a 22-oz bomber of the 2006 vintage at Bottleworks in Seattle, Washington. Pours a clear reddish amber brew with a creamy off-white head that quickly dissolves to a fine film. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, oak wood, dark pitted fruits and some flowery hops. Taste is syrupy, full bodied with hardly any carbonation; along with flavors of caramel malt, dark red cherries, brown sugar and a touch of toffee. Finish is where the high alcohol kicks in. Very smooth, a warm sensation with a cherry and caramel aftertaste. An awesome barely wine and it didn’t need a lot of aging. Dogbrick (2869), Columbus, Ohio, USA

The beer pours a dark reddish-brown color with a medium thin beige head that diminishes slowly. Thin rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of ripe fruit, dark malt and hops. Rich and syrupy body with flavors of roasted malt, caramel and dark fruit. Decent amount of hops in the background as well. The finish is full and malty with a lingering fruity aftertaste. Very good overall, and probably my favorite of the ’05-’07 vertical. mkobes (2104), paramus, New Jersey, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Aug 31, 2007 Dark brown color. A very well hopped barleywine, but there is also sweet malt for balance. The alcohol is well hidden adn it is not appear to be as strong as it really is. Well balanced with the malt and hops. jsquire (2113), St. Marys, Ohio, USA

Nose of dark fruit and toffee. Well balanced with toffee sweetness, ripe pit fruit, and something green in the finish. The alcohol sort of floats along with this beer rather than dominating it. Really enjoyable beer. It won first place in the 2008 Great Alaska Beer and Barley Wine Festival.
