Commercial Description:
Clear dark red color. Fresh deeply toasted malty flavors combine with caramel notes, dark fruit and a very floral character in the aroma. Very smooth, clean malt flavors with notes of marshmallow and fresh biscuits. Excellent mouthfeel and texture with a hop bitterness in the finish. A very clean alcohol presence adds character to both the aroma and finish.

PPRBSG09. Bottle. Pours a brune body with an off white head. Chewy tawny plum and raisin with a big etoh warming. Hints of vanilla and surprisingly well refined at 13%.

Bottle at PilsnerPeter’s Spring Gathering. Pours a deep brown with a thin to medium yellowed (I know... it was weird...never seen a head that color) tan head. Caramel all over the place, with a little bit of plum and some nice vanilla. More big raisiny plum notes and booze on the body. Ends hot as well.

CPLYFO 09. Thanks to JMFG. Pours a nice slightly hazy deep amber with a thin and lasting head- some lace. Aroma is intensely malty- huge toasted , caramel, and bready malts, toffee, and tons of fruity esters- big raisin and fig, with sugar coated dates, honey and nicely floral and fruity hops. More raisin and fruits in the flavor without becoming too syrupy sweet or cloying but still lots of big complex sugars, honey, some maple, floral hops, and tons of big bready dark toasty malts, caramel and some molasses. Very rich big and smooth and surprisingly easy tpo sip on despite the huge abv. Awesome. 2007 was quite a bit better, but this was still great stuff.

Bottle... C&P’sLYFO Throwdown... Cloudy, caramel-colored ale with a small, fizzy, off-white head. Not very aromatic. It’s a touch spicy and herbal. Full-bodied with stinging carbonation. The flavor is more subtle, more balanced, more acidic and less roasted than the ’07 version. The lengthy, tart finish winds up being fairly dry. Thanks to JMFG for bringing this bottle to the Throwdown! * * Video = http://homepage.mac.com/maltajo/RATEBEER/iMovieThe

Bomber, courtesy JMFG. Darker than the 2007 version, the pour is a lightly hazy, dark chestnut brown color with frothy tan head. Thick legging and spotty lacing bubbles emerge from a dense, soapy wash. Aromas are rich with chocolate, caramel, and toasted toffee up front, with hints of sweet cream and vanilla. Substantial, piney hop notes show considerably more brash than the previous year’s vintage, taking more of an American style approach. Flavors follow suit, choco-caramel and darkly toasted toffee sweetness balanced out well by the piney, sprucey hop bitterness. Smooth and deliciously drinkable for a beer of this magnitude, there is little to no alcoholic burn or stickiness. Another fine barleywine from Pelican, though I preferred the style-bending nature of the 2007 to this slightly more brash version.

Bottle from the Otown throwdown. JMFG. Dark brown pour with aromas of caramel, sweet spices, honey, sugar and fruits. Flavor has some nice caramel malt, fruit, vanilla and a good hit of hop bitterness. Nice.
