Nose of sweet caramel corn and a bit of DMS or creamed corn aroma, but not too offensive or anything. Dough and candy corn round out the nose. Medium bodied, lightly slick up front and then more thick (but not really thick) over the middle. Sweet starchy corn and grain flavor, light butter and light doughy fruit even. Overall a good beer, not exceptional, a little too sweet at times but it does has a decent doughy/sour yeast character that helps. urbnhautebourg (974), Annapolis, Maryland, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 22, 2007 Rather than dump on this beer for not being a doppelbock like Celebrator, I will take it for what it undoubtedly is: a Hellerbock. The malt flavor is unmistakeably Penn--it is rather like an exaggerated version of their Helles. But, you know, I get very disappointed when a brewery’s Bock is simply that. And amped-up lagers like this can really be boring, because they get "hot" (as here) or too rich and syrupy (this one doesn’t suffer from syrupiness), but don’t really benefit from the extra infusion of ingredients and alcohol. I liked it insofar as I like Penn’s malt profile, but would be happier drinking their Pilsner, which is cheaper and less likely to impair me. Maverick34 (716), New York, USA
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 8/20 | Jun 21, 2007 Wow, this was a doppelbock? For f-ks sake had a bit of this and was convinced it was just a bad, weak Saison. Not bad or undrinkable, but for a doppelbock? untenable. jefcon (1008), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Jun 21, 2007 Crystal clear and golden in the glass with a fully-diminishing alka-seltzer head. Aromas are... mushroom?... in addition to lots of strong grains. Sweet malts, some butterscotch and a drying finish. More an experiment to pack alcohol into this beer than a regard for flavor and style, I’m afraid. MrBendo (1044), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 20, 2007 On tap at Capone’s. Clear yellow color. I really though this was a mai-bock. And an uninspiring one, at that. Sweet malt was most of the taste. Alcohol is well hidden. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 20, 2007 Draught at Capone’s. Clear yellow body with mild carbonation and a filmy white head. Aroma of citrus, butterscotch and melon. Fairly standard lager flavors with a little bit of elevated malt character. Phantom alcohol presence--8% I would never guess. Quaffing, but completely uninspiring.

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 20, 2007 On draft @ Capones with the Mad Indian. Aroma of citrus, honey, slight fruit, and yeast. The flavor is fruit, honey, and smooth for 8%, but just an ok brew. iowaherkeye (1873), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 19, 2007 22oz bottle, no date from DocLock, thanks Jeff (mystery swap 2.0). Pours a clear yellow amber with a one finger eggshell head. Aroma of sweet malts, corn, a bit of caramel, minimal raisins, andlight spicy hops. Flavor is much the same--a bit like a fancified malt liquor or not very fancy maibock--with a dry lightly alcoholic finish. Moderate carbonation with a medium to full body. As a doppelbock, this doesn’t rate very well for me.
