Commercial Description:
Until the 19th century, St. Nikolaus was a tall, stern, patriarch in bishop's robes. Then he became a sky-riding, jolly old elf. He may be a milk-and-cookies kind of guy today, but he knows what you want and it's this St. Nikolaus Bock Bier. It's rich, dark and full-bodied, brewed with a variety of roasted and chocolate malts. Celebrate the holidays with St. Nikolaus. He's in this bottle. Gee, we hope you've been good this year.

2005 edition. Pours brown with an off white head. Smells of biscuits with some vegetal notes. Tastes spicy with some nice tarte elements.

05 bottle. Well this one did not hold up to cellaring as well as I had hoped. The beer suffers from the paper, vinegar, and sour tastes that you get from beer getting old. The appearance is dark amber with a two finger head. The aroma has brown sugar, cola, soured fruit and a trace of earthiness. The flavor does have the nice candy sweet element from the aroma along with toasted malt but all the above mentioned bad qualities as well. The palate is OK for the style and the aftertaste is a little like rum. I will rate again when I get a fresh sample.

Bottle. Very dark. Quite good. Rich, seet and roasty, but no flavor is overwhelming.

Clear, dark copper appearance with an average size head and slight lacing. Earthy, briar patch aroma with sweet malts in the background. Toasty, moderately sweet taste with dried fruit, spices, toffee and caramel. Medium bodied, well carbonated mouthfeel, leading to a pleasant, lingering, mildly spiced finish.

On tap at Penn Brewery. Dark, clearish caramel. Aroma is caramel, nuts, malt. Flavor is the same with a hint of grass. Fairly pleasant on tap.

I wasn’t a big fan of this at all, had on tap, pours a mahgony colour, has a sort of roasted malt flavour to it, I didn’t like how this one finished, it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Thanks to my friend Karl for this beer, its his favorite winter brew. Pours a deep brown/black with minimal tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, toffee and cocoa. Flavor is full of more roasted malts, coffee, cocoa and finishes with a nice hop bite. Medium bodied beer. Solid winter beer.

12 oz bottle, 2006 version. Pours to a beautiful, bright, chestnut color, with a thick, creamy, white head, and a good bit of carbonation. The nose on this beer is fantastic with lots of good aromas of toasty and nutty malt. The palate is firm, with lots of good toasty and nutty malt flavor, on a polished, smooth, round body. This beer finishes with more fantatic clean and malty flavors up front, then ends with the perfect amount of herbal hop bitterness, and some sooth alcohol to balance. A very impressive bock bier, with fantastic malt character. A perfect beer to enjoy over the Christmas season.
