Commercial Description:
Until the 19th century, St. Nikolaus was a tall, stern, patriarch in bishop's robes. Then he became a sky-riding, jolly old elf. He may be a milk-and-cookies kind of guy today, but he knows what you want and it's this St. Nikolaus Bock Bier. It's rich, dark and full-bodied, brewed with a variety of roasted and chocolate malts. Celebrate the holidays with St. Nikolaus. He's in this bottle. Gee, we hope you've been good this year.

Pours dark brown with a small head. The nose was malty with some fruit and nuts.A decent offering from Penn, but nothing mindblowing.

Pours lucid and red with a thin skin of white. Firm, fruity aroma of cranberry, raisin, and blackberry; scone and biscuit maltiness, syrupy caramel, and bittersweet reduced rum. Noble hops, light vinegar and toffee. Flavor is primarily raisin, rock candy, and thin vanilla; browned bananas, pistachio, almond. Thoroughly straightforward, and fully likeable. Bits of vinousness, pepper and vegetal hop tones flutter with fitting restraint throughout. Palate is easy and sparkly; light to medium bodied, and almost unnoticeable in swallowing. Finishes with some sugary dough, orange and maple. A completely comfortable, fairly complex and refreshing winter sessioner. Thanks Ken!

Interesting concept brewing a bock as a Xmas beer. Maybe best described as a Bock beer base with chocolate malts and a bit of spice added for Xmas beer flavor. Interesting and drinkable.

A very good seasonal. Malty, with a hint of some spices. I suspect a lot of hops to balance the malts, but they were hardly evident.

This is one of my favorite penn beers. Great chocolate malt flavor with a nice hop balance.

Clear, dark copper appearance with an average size head and slight lacing. Earthy, briar patch aroma with sweet malts in the background. Toasty, moderately sweet taste with dried fruit, spices, toffee and caramel. Medium bodied, well carbonated mouthfeel, leading to a pleasant, lingering, mildly spiced finish.

Bottle from Sams in Durham. Dark clear brown pour with nearly white thin head that sticks around. Wheat and malt strong on the nose. Roasty chocolate. Odd vanilla-like notes. Definitely decent, and cool bottle. Simply okay beer.

On tap at Penn Brewery. Dark, clearish caramel. Aroma is caramel, nuts, malt. Flavor is the same with a hint of grass. Fairly pleasant on tap.
