Commercial Description:
Until the 19th century, St. Nikolaus was a tall, stern, patriarch in bishop's robes. Then he became a sky-riding, jolly old elf. He may be a milk-and-cookies kind of guy today, but he knows what you want and it's this St. Nikolaus Bock Bier. It's rich, dark and full-bodied, brewed with a variety of roasted and chocolate malts. Celebrate the holidays with St. Nikolaus. He's in this bottle. Gee, we hope you've been good this year.

Poured from a well-chilled 12 oz bottle. Deep brown or crimson with a bare whisper of a off-white foamy head that virtually disappeared after 10 seconds. Aroma? Not much ... a virtual whimper to the olfactory senses ... roasted barley, maybe a slight swirl of fresh pine. Thankfully, the flavor is more entertaining ... moderately robust with some dark cherry, bitter chocolate, and a bitter finish. Good. (#2724, 2/23/2007)

The head was a light tan and a bit creamy. Aroma at first reminded me of spicy apples. Then it was just spicy. The body was a very dark ruby red. The flavor was spicy, a little sweet and felt warm. At first this beer tasted great, but quickly I was desiring something else.

Out of a growler, shared by ratman197. Pours clear amber with a small off white head, not much retention or lacing. Aromas of roasted malts, caramel, some fruit and spice. Flavors of brown sugar, caramel, some spice and a decent hop presence. Medium to full bodied.

2006 batch. 12 oz. brown, longneck bottle. No freshness date seen. Poured out a deep chocolate brown, with a sticky tan colored head. It also has red highlights to it. Aromas are of chocolate malts, roasted coffee beans, sweet malts. Flavors are of roasted malts, semi-sweet chocolate, roasty. Thick mouthfeel, decent body. Alcohol is well hidden. Finished semi-sweet.

Deep brown color; non-existent head; Grapey aroma. Heavy burnt malt flavors attack you right away. Small amount of brown sugar. Slight sour notes at mid-glass (bile?). Palate is strange- thin upfront but heavy feeling at back of throat. An uneven beer.

Bottle... Clear, deep, dark, mahogany lager with a small, creamy, white head. Chocolaty, nutty bouquet presents subtle notes of coconut, pistachio, cashew, cola and vanilla. Smells more like brown ale than a dunkler bock. The flavor is thin, but follows suit with observations of chocolate, cola and nuts with a touch of vanilla. Surprisingly, leans just a tad on the bitter side of balance. Medium-bodied and watery with lively carbonation. Lengthy, bitter, mouth-drying finish.
