daknole (2801), Plantation, Florida, USA Sep 16, 2009 Big ass bottle. Brown pour, yellowish/tan head. Aroma is smokey, malty, caramel, peat, raisins and maybe a slight hint of hops. Flavor is smoke, sweetness, caramel, nuts, peat, caramel. Damn I really enjoyed this. A lot! MaltDawg (778), Richmond, Virginia, USA Sep 16, 2009 Richmond RB Gathering. Rich malt sweetness with light peat smoke in aroma. Clear deep amber with little carbonation and head. Malty with tea like hop notes. Light smokiness in flavor. Finish is lightly sweet. Kinz (2179), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA Sep 12, 2009 Deep reddish brown. Aroma of molasses, a touch of smoke. Flavor matches, lots of rich malts. Can’t say that it is particularly comlex. But quite tasty. dkachur (2313), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Sep 12, 2009 2008 fliptop bottle courtesy of jcwattsrugger. Thanks! Pours a medium reddish brown color with nearly no head. Huge toffee aroma with grainy and nutty notes. Taste is toffee, raisin and faint leafy hops. Caramel finish. Medium bodied, though the carbonation is very weak. Tasty beer. BigBen2120 (688), Derry, New Hampshire, USA Aug 17, 2009 One litre swing-top bottle obtained at the Liquor Shop in Tyngsborro, Mass. Pours a translucent dark brown body with ruby-red highlights and a thin film of light tan head. Caramel, toffee make up the aroma with hints of peat and smoke. Rich caramel, toffee, dark chocolate, coffee with hints of peat and smoke compose the flavor. Dates and nuts also make very subtle appearances. Rich full body with ample carbonation. A sweet pleasant combination of flavors and very drinkable for the complexity and full-bodiedness. Another sweet treat from what’s fast becoming one of my favorite somewhat local breweries. Another slam-dunk from Pennechuck - well worth the cost! TaktikMTL (2739), Montréal-Nord, Quebec, Canada Jul 30, 2009 Brassin 2008. (Rating #2544) bigrond (1043), factoryville, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 13, 2009 Pours a murky brown with a nice strong aroma. Mouthfeel has a hearty thickness to it. Flavor is excellent for its style. The 9 percent is hidden quite well, goes down smooth as silk. The best feature by far is the large resealable bottle ala ’Grolsh’ style. This was a nice find. MartinT (5026), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jun 12, 2009 My Bottom Line:
This lush Scotch Ale delivers the expected caramel sweetness in a plump body lying atop a feathery bed of wooden smoke and fieldberries.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the mahogany-tinged dark brown.
-Alcohol is very well hidden by the residual sugars.
-The nose does not necessarily announce the malt fest this beer is. Maybe some maderization will help out, but for now is quite discreet, focusing on wooden tones and not too much caramel.
-Hop bitterness is agreeable, ably drying out the potent dextrins.
Bottle; 2008 vintage.
