Mostly clear, burnt orange ale with a mid-sized, creamy, khaki head. Good, tight retention. Smoke and caramel notes stand out in the nose. Full-bodied with a 2%-milk mouthfeel and mild carbonation. Sweet caramel and toffee with no semblance of balance. Lightly smoky. Lingering sweetness in the finish. Muchos gracias to mcbackus for bringing this one along! | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 12, 2009 My Bottom Line:
This lush Scotch Ale delivers the expected caramel sweetness in a plump body lying atop a feathery bed of wooden smoke and fieldberries.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the mahogany-tinged dark brown.
-Alcohol is very well hidden by the residual sugars.
-The nose does not necessarily announce the malt fest this beer is. Maybe some maderization will help out, but for now is quite discreet, focusing on wooden tones and not too much caramel.
-Hop bitterness is agreeable, ably drying out the potent dextrins.

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 7, 2008 1 L fliptop bottle. Dark brown beer with a thick fluffy tan head. Aroma is great. Sweet, smoky and peaty. Loads of rich sweet smokiness over a rich toffeeish base. Lightly fruity and plummy with a light molasses sweetness. Sweet and toffeeish flavour with even more smoke retronasally. Man, this stuff rocks.
