| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 17, 2009 2008 bottle from Half Time, Poughkeepsie. Sludgy, thick dark brown pour. Modest head if you give it a vigorous enough pour, but this one seems already to be on the downside. Faded chocolate malts in the nose, understated but thick. Alas, not too much of an espresso quality in there. The mouthfeel is pretty pleasant, nicely oily and lasting. But again, we’ve got something faded and almost papery here. No coffee, no bitterness at all. Hmm. Decent to drink, but until I can try it fresher (I assume this is a major part of the problem) I can’t rate it very highly. chriso (4796), London, Greater London, England

Espresso is present in good measure. Vanilla is thankfully quite restrained (not a big fan of too much vanilla). Some woody notes as might be expected with a few years age but not much sign of oxidation. Mouth-filling and delicious.

Dark dried fruit and a faint smoke note. Full bodied with a rich and thick body. Smooth and tangy with, once again, a faint smokey nuance. Tart and tingling effervescence. Woody with a burnt toast flavor. Very malty with an emphasis on the chocolate. Touch of honey and caramel. Very sticky palate. Very nice indeed! oteyj (776), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 24, 2009 Dead black pour with a one finger brown head that slowly subsides into a veneer. Aroma is massively roasty with notes of bourbon, vanilla, raisin, plum, fig, espresso, fennel, dark chocolate, and thorough booziness. Flavor is loaded with roast, dark chocolate, charred oak, espresso, cream, and bourbon-booze. Sweet and bitter notes are balanced excellently, and are smoothy rounded out by the subtle smoothness of vanilla bean. Palate is viscous, smooth, creamy, and rich with medium effervescence and a semi chalky roast oriented finish. This imperial stout shines in its ability to present such a wide variety and combination of flavors in a palpable, non melting pot sort of manner. Various quintessential stout flavor all present in such a unique fashion, though my only complaint is a moderate thinness in the mouthfeel. I’m sad to see this brewery go and I’m glad to have tried this before they did for it is quite a treat. craftycarl21 (562), South Hero, Vermont, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 23, 2009 Black pour with a small brown head that dissipates rather quickly. Aroma holds lots of coffee, whiskey, vanilla, and roasted malt. Also some caramel, molasses, fig, plum, and some black licorice; really a complex smell. Booze seems to be a bit present, tingling the nose. Flavor starts with a big shot of chocolate, roasted malt, and coffee. Flavor then shifts to charred wood, whiskey, and dark fruit, with the 10% alcohol certainly evident at the end. Some chocolate sweetness returns just as the liquid slides down the throat to begin quite a nice aftertaste. Palate is a bit thin for such a high alcohol imperial stout; not bad, but not as full and rich as it could be. Glad I got to try this now that Pennichuck has gone under, as this is a pretty solid stout. fonefan (11822), VestJylland, Denmark
