Commercial Description:
Our fourth in the Firehouse Ales Series, Pompier means "fireman" in French and represents our continued commitment to celebrate and honor the men and women who respond to the call day after day. Pompier is rich and smooth with complexities that come from a huge grain bill comprised of premium imported specialty malts, French Strissel Spalt aroma hops and a 3 month aging process in oak hogsheads where it is combined with toasted French oak wood chips and champagne yeast. Pompier is intended to be a vintage quality English-Style Barleywine with a French twist. Appreciate its fine character and 12.1%ABV when we release this single 10 barrel batch sometime in December or you may choose to cellar it for many years to come.

You will find Pompier on retail shelves packaged in the same 1 Liter Swing-Top bottle that has become a signature for our specialty beers.

Swing-top bottle generously shared by psprings. Pours a rich toffee color with an off-white head. Very hot with alcohol up front. Evidence of a barrel(s) being involved is limited. Tastes aggressively of alcohol, caramel, cherry cough syrup, and vanilla. Firewater for firemen -- I can dig it.

1 liter swing-top bottle purchased at the liquor store in Tyngsborro, Mass. Pours a murky, virtually opaque copper colored body with a good inch of off-white head that slowly dissipates leaving some spectacular lacing. Smells fruity, woody, alcoholic, with definite bourbon notes. Tastes fruity, vinous, with caramel and toffee notes and wood and bourbon character. Aftertaste has a woody toffee character. Just a tinge of alcohol warming, though alcohol isn’t nearly as present as expected. Full-bodied but stopping short of viscosity, with moderate carbonation. Much more drinkable than it should be for such a big beer, though still a bit of a sipper. Complex, balanced, and unique. Perfect for sipping on a frigid New Hampshire night like tonight. One of the finest barleywines I’ve had. This is a slam-dunk for Pennichuck and well worth the price-tag.

Bottle. Amber pour, beige head. Caramel, vanilla, wood, syrup, and sour mash. Flavor is oaky and sweet with caramel and vanilla. Pretty nice. But not amazing.

1l bottle 2008. pours copper/ruby with beige head. Has many barley wine aspects but hard to get over this tartness and sourness palate the beer had. aroma of oak wood with notes of sourness taste, light sour palate, not sure if it is complemented by the yeast as it seemed to have a light sour woody aspect or just too much contact with the oak. Nice caramel malts and oak wood with hints of fruits toward the finish. Still can’t get over the sour aspect I was getting, this would have certainly deserved a higher rating.

Bottle shared by psprings. Thank you sir! The nose was familiar having just drank an Abbaye 2006 - earthy cherry candy with very faint oak. Flavor was much the same - reminded me of a better-aged Behemoth or a less aggressive Arctic Devil. Could have used a bourbon barrel.

1 litre bottle from 5 points. nothing special here. oak aging adds some sourness that i’m not sure complements the underlying beverage.

Pours a dark amber orange with a thin lacing wispy white head. Aroma of sweet caramel toffee and light fruits with a subtle oaky whiskey character. Starts with good oily mouthfeel and sweet malt sugars with a decent mild whiskey balance that becomes more complex as it warms. Has a good citrusy bittering hop presence as well. Finishes smooth and semi-sweet hiding its alcohol very well.
