Commercial Description:
Our fourth in the Firehouse Ales Series, Pompier means "fireman" in French and represents our continued commitment to celebrate and honor the men and women who respond to the call day after day. Pompier is rich and smooth with complexities that come from a huge grain bill comprised of premium imported specialty malts, French Strissel Spalt aroma hops and a 3 month aging process in oak hogsheads where it is combined with toasted French oak wood chips and champagne yeast. Pompier is intended to be a vintage quality English-Style Barleywine with a French twist. Appreciate its fine character and 12.1%ABV when we release this single 10 barrel batch sometime in December or you may choose to cellar it for many years to come.

You will find Pompier on retail shelves packaged in the same 1 Liter Swing-Top bottle that has become a signature for our specialty beers.

I am drinking a 1 liter bottle of 12% barleywine all by myself - why the hell does Pennichuck keep putting such high grav beers in such large bottles? - anyway, let’s hope I get out of this alive - pours a hazy medium amber, with a fairly impressive lace - loads of oak in the nose, as well as notes of whiskey, caramel, cherries - I should have gauged from the description (aged in oak barrels, WITH oak chips) that this beer would be an oak overload, and it really is - the oak is so dominant that it adds a dry, bitter (nearly sour), almost gin-like character to the beer, which barely makes way for any of the beer’s other characteristics - the british barleywine qualities are there (mostly some doughy character, caramel, nuttiness, light oats), but the oak slams the palate so much that you can hardly taste these things - the alcohol is quite well-hidden, though, and once the flavor settles in, the oak is a bit more tolerable - finish is bitter and mildly acidic, with some alcohol warmth - if they lay off some of the oak, this would be much better.

08 swingtop. Maple syrup colored pour with a fine tan head. Aroma and flavor are dominated by a single noted grapefruity hoppiness. Vanilla, whiskey, oak, alcohol, and caramel are there, but are secondary. Definitely would benefit from some age.

Aged 1 year. Pours deep mahogany into a snifter. Off-white head pancakes and recedes at a medium fast pace to hug rim. Oak and molasses aromas. Oak upfront and full with a vanilla and coconut middle and a sweet, lasting dark caramel, molasses and alcohol burn.

Dark aroma. Pours very nice sweet barley wine. Good kick to its finish. First time from this brewery. Nice showing and this would age well.

Bottle. Pours an amber brown body with a light tan head. Sweet fruity esters, vinous fruits, light oak, sweet vanilla, loads of malty caramel. Overly sweet might benefit from some time on this one.

Darker amber color, moderate sized head, pretty good lacing and retention. Aroma is very light for the style, there are traces of caramel and oak barrel. Some fruity notes as well, but really... there is not a lot going on here. Medium bodied, alcohol hidden surprisingly well. Overall lackluster.

Pours a hazy medium/dark body with a small off-white head and some mild soapy lacing. It has a dusty aroma with some thin caramel and charred oak. The flavor is also very dusty with notes of cigar smoke, toasted malts, carmamel, and oak with some whiskey and subtle hops in the finish. All of the flavors are a bit thin and watery.

Brown pour with a white tight head and lace. Caramel and abv on the nose. Caramel, semi sweet, light fruit, and a medium bitter. Medium carbonation and mouthfeel. Abv comes through but this beer finished with a metallic after taste that I’m sure if you licked the tinmans ass that is the flavor that you would come away with.
