Commercial Description:
Our fourth in the Firehouse Ales Series, Pompier means "fireman" in French and represents our continued commitment to celebrate and honor the men and women who respond to the call day after day. Pompier is rich and smooth with complexities that come from a huge grain bill comprised of premium imported specialty malts, French Strissel Spalt aroma hops and a 3 month aging process in oak hogsheads where it is combined with toasted French oak wood chips and champagne yeast. Pompier is intended to be a vintage quality English-Style Barleywine with a French twist. Appreciate its fine character and 12.1%ABV when we release this single 10 barrel batch sometime in December or you may choose to cellar it for many years to come.

You will find Pompier on retail shelves packaged in the same 1 Liter Swing-Top bottle that has become a signature for our specialty beers.

Pours a hazy medium/dark body with a small off-white head and some mild soapy lacing. It has a dusty aroma with some thin caramel and charred oak. The flavor is also very dusty with notes of cigar smoke, toasted malts, carmamel, and oak with some whiskey and subtle hops in the finish. All of the flavors are a bit thin and watery.

Bottle:   Deep amber, on the reddish side, some sediment floats about, large frothy light beige head, nice lacing.   Powdered sugar nose, faint woodiness, light fruit skin.   Very light on the tongue.   Starts off with a huge twang.   Finishes light for a 12.1% beer.   Not malty enough.   No real malt sweetness for an English Barleywine.   Moderate body and mouthfeel. Yeah, this is somewhat of an odd duck.   Too much fruitiness and not enough malt.

One liter bottle thanks to Toby. I was warned that this beer was infected or somehow off, but it was actually quite nice. Pours a dark mahogany color with a small white head. The aroma is just great; bourbon, oak, dark fruit, yeast, sweet caramel. The flavor is indeed sour- dark cherries and sour vinegar-, but a large bourbon and woody sweetness provide balance, light sweet fruits and caramel. Loads of barrel, and I wonder if the champagne yeast is actually the cause of the odd tartness? I liked it, it was very complex.

Pours coffee amber wuth a thick. beige. pillowy head. Heavily floral aroma: lavander, cream, vanilla, spice, and hints of hops. Medium bodied with a beautifully balanced mouthfeel. Nice lacing throughout. Clean finish. Excellent barley wine.

(Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Dark reddish brown colour, slightly hazy, with brief beige head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of dark berries, caramel, oak wood, rubber and earthy hops. Malty, fruity taste with dark fruit, red berries, caramel, oak wood and earthy, citrussy hops in the finish. It’s got an almost tart sourness to it, that might need some cellaring to be rounded off. Full body, not very sweet, but vinous with lots of alcohol shining through. Interesting beer, hardly balanced but complex. A couple of years in the cellar might give it a smoother balance.

sample from the bottle at The 2009 Great Decatur Beer Festival on 10/17/09... dark murky red color with small head... nice oak nose, along with some dark fruit... big round body... low carbonation... sweet hop presence throughout... didn’t taste the 12%...

A - Pours a deep copper, almost opaque, with a very thin off-white head. S - Smells of malt and over-ripe fall fruits, very pleasant. T - The initial taste is of a normal barleywine, decent but nothing too special. After it hits the back of the mouth the flavor becomes so dominated by the oak that nothing else can be noticed. Not enough balance. M - Decent mouthfeel, not too thin nor too thick. D - It’s a surprisingly light drink for such a high ABV, but the oaky aftertaste is really too much.

1liter bottle. 2008. deep murky garnet under a medium sized frothy tan head. lightly tart aroma with some vinous fruits and caramel malt. tart flavors. extremely fruity with lots of raspberry, cherry, strawberry flavors that would make me think it’s a fruit beer if i didn’t know better. this drinks unbelievable easy for 12.1%. creamy and medium bodied. i have no idea if i got the infected batch i heard was going around but i don’t really care. this stuff rocks!
