JoeMcPhee (4893), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Feb 27, 2009 Tap at Standings. Deep amber beer with thin white head. The aroma is just loaded with spice. Very, very spicy. Lots of heavy cinnamon, clove, allspice and ginger. There might be a touch of light brown sugar, but it’s just completely hammered by the spices. Very unbalanced. Can’t say that I enjoyed this one. Cletus (5002), Connecticut, USA Feb 19, 2009 Growler sample. Pours dark copper/mahogany with a thin tan head. Smells of winter spice, some caramel, some sugary hints. Tastes earthy and sweet with lots of spiciness and a full mouthfeel. Enjoyable. jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Jan 27, 2009 on tap-pours an offwhite head with amber color. Aroma is medium malt-brown sugar, spices-nutmeg/cinnamon. Taste is spices-nutmeg/cinnamon, medium malt-brown sugar. OK carbonation. mcox90 (618), Wilton, USA Dec 27, 2008 This is this brews first year and it is currently only available on tap or in growlers filled at the brewery. This rating is from a growler. I have gone through 2 this season. Pours a deep golden brown with some red highlights. A vigorous pour nets you a good 2 finger head. Aroma is mild nutmeg and cinnamon with a sweet malt hiding in the background. Palate is smooth and full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Flavor is nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, all with a sweet malt background. What I enjoy most about this winter brew is the proportions are just right. Some beers that bill themselves as "winter brews" or wassails are to heavily spiced. The spices dominate instead of compliment. Pennichucks owner, Phil Jewett, assures me this will be bottled next year.
