Pours a very nice oily viscous pure black with a thin lasting filmy dark head. Aroma is licorice, nutty toasty and roasty malts, roasted barely- coffee, lots of earth, hints of dirt and ash with some fruity esters. Fruity and modestly sweet flavor- raisin, and some apple, chocolate malts, modest roast character, licorice and hints of tar and tobacco as it warms a bit. This was pretty big and complex for a 9.2%. daknole (3002), Scottsdale, Arizona, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 25, 2009 2008 vintage, bottle #102. Pours virtually pitch black with hints of mahogany at the outer edges. A thick, foamy, light brown head is well retained, leaving dense, sheety lacing on the glass. This brew looks heavy and oily, just like an imperial stout should. Aromas of dark, concentrated cacao, molasses, espresso, and dark fruits show complex and well integrated. Notes of old oak, vanilla, and some roasted hazelnut come through as well. Flavors show a light smokiness, perhaps from the molasses, with more toasty, oaken vanilla and heaps of rich chocolate and scorched caramel. I swear I get some faint bourbon notes, though that might be a figment of my imagination. The body is thick, smooth, and creamy. Nealy full bodied and lightly carbonated, the palate is really nice. This is a damn nice imperial stout. Pleasant surprise here. hopdog (5612), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA
