Commercial Description:
Choc beer was named after its place of origin, the Choctaw Nation. The Choctaw people brewed a homemade beer and taught the Italian immigrants, who came to work in the coal mines, how to make the home brew. Pete Pritchard was one of those immigrants. He came to the US with his family in 1903 and began to work in the coal mines at age eleven. At twenty-one years of age, he was nearly killed in a mine accident. After the accident, Pete Pritchard began making and selling choc beer, along with sausages and cheese in his home in Krebs. A prosperious business developed and in 1925, Peter formally opened a restaurant in his home. Pete's Place Restaurant served choc beer until 1932 when Pete was arrested for the brew.

In 1964, Bill Prichard, the sone of the original owner, developed a "gentleman's agreement" with the powers that be about the illegal choc beer...until a statewide newspaper ran a front page, headline story about the agreement. That was the end of choc beer at Pete's until Joe Prichard, Bill's son who now wears the chef's hat and has the choc beer recipe, reintroduced choc beer as a legal brew in 1995.

Choc brand beer is brewed in small batches in our brewery using the finest ingredients. Starting with beer-perfect Krebs water, we blend American Malted Barley, wheat, and roasted malts with American-grown Liberty and Cascade hops to create more than just a beer... a legendary Choc beer is unfiltered, so all the flavor we create stays where it belongs. And since it's unfiltered, you may notice a cloudy haze in the beer. This is normal. Tradition dictates Choc beer be "bottle-conditions," which means it's fermented a second time in the bottle, as well as aged in the bottle, resulting in a thin layer of yeast at the bottom. You can choose to carefully decant the beer off the yeast, or simply drink it, as we do, and let the yeast travel into your glass. Either way, we hope you enjoy our beer, a handcrafted Krebs original. Style: American wheat Color: Golden opaque Ingredients: 2-row malted barley and malted wheat, Liberty and Cascade hops Bitterness Units: 15 IBU's Alcohol: Alcohol by volume 5.0%, Alcohol by weight 3.9, also available in 3.2% Alcohol by weight version

On tap at Taperwerks. Color was almost lemonade yellow, artificial looking. Head was ok, lacing was not much. Aroma was citrusey, lots of citrus. The flavor was a lemoney, citrusey, lightly sour mess. No significant value derived from any wheat presence and this thing was more like flavored water than beer. Mouthfeel light and watery. Unfortunately this reminded me too much of my world wide swill drinking to score another country (although in this case we’re talking about a state).

12 oz bottle from Soonah - thanks John! Murky yellow with a white head. Soft citrus nose, dusty, light lemon. Odd. Not really wheaty at all - light flavored, malty lemon. Finish is blunted lemon zest. Strange take on the style, but by no means bad.

Good wheat beer look, a cloudy straw with a respectable head. The aroma carries wheat flakes, honey, lemon candy, and wet paper to the nose. It tastes like a typical brewpub wheat ale, some wheat, some lemon tartness. Something to try once.

12oz bottle, courtesy of argo0. Thanks, Aaron! Pours a hazy, dim, effervescent, yellowish-brown color; fluffy, off-white head with great retention and lacing. Aroma of lemony dishsoap. Medium mouthfeel: hard candy and sugar, somewhat cloying sweetness, minimal citrus hops. That said, it tastes much better than it smells. Medium, sugary finish.

Pours a cloudy, deep golden color with a fizy white head. Malt and wheat spring from the aroma. Very bland taste. Kind of tastes like lemon soda. No real traits of being a beer. Definitely not much work was put into this, as John said, the nice sticker on the bottom of the can.

I got a can of this for christmas from the venerable jgb9348. If I know Jeremy, he probably hasn’t tried this one yet, so I can’t blame him. Because its in a can, and I didn’t read it, I was expecting a choclately stout or porter. What poured out looked like a belgian white but all similarities to decent beer stopped there. I know the American Wheat category is overall weak, but this has to be the weakest. Terrible beer, overly sweet, with no drying elements like coriander or clove on the palate. Just wet, slovenly, sugar malt and straw. Nothing more. Oklahoma should stick to playing football, not brewing beer. BTW... I thought it was a nice touch how "Krebs Brewing Co. OK. was placed on the bottom of the can with a peel off sticker.

Thin head of dense bubbles. Decent carbonation. Roasty aroma with some cinnamon and a light fruityness. Color is a dark amber. Dry palate with some wheat notes and spices. Slight tartness as others have described. Some grittyness and a lingerign bitterness in there. A decent brew.

Pours slightly cloudy with small head. Nice, fruity aroma. Slightly tart, with good clean finish. Excellent brew.
