Commercial Description:
Choc beer was named after its place of origin, the Choctaw Nation. The Choctaw people brewed a homemade beer and taught the Italian immigrants, who came to work in the coal mines, how to make the home brew. Pete Pritchard was one of those immigrants. He came to the US with his family in 1903 and began to work in the coal mines at age eleven. At twenty-one years of age, he was nearly killed in a mine accident. After the accident, Pete Pritchard began making and selling choc beer, along with sausages and cheese in his home in Krebs. A prosperious business developed and in 1925, Peter formally opened a restaurant in his home. Pete's Place Restaurant served choc beer until 1932 when Pete was arrested for the brew.

In 1964, Bill Prichard, the sone of the original owner, developed a "gentleman's agreement" with the powers that be about the illegal choc beer...until a statewide newspaper ran a front page, headline story about the agreement. That was the end of choc beer at Pete's until Joe Prichard, Bill's son who now wears the chef's hat and has the choc beer recipe, reintroduced choc beer as a legal brew in 1995.

Choc brand beer is brewed in small batches in our brewery using the finest ingredients. Starting with beer-perfect Krebs water, we blend American Malted Barley, wheat, and roasted malts with American-grown Liberty and Cascade hops to create more than just a beer... a legendary Choc beer is unfiltered, so all the flavor we create stays where it belongs. And since it's unfiltered, you may notice a cloudy haze in the beer. This is normal. Tradition dictates Choc beer be "bottle-conditions," which means it's fermented a second time in the bottle, as well as aged in the bottle, resulting in a thin layer of yeast at the bottom. You can choose to carefully decant the beer off the yeast, or simply drink it, as we do, and let the yeast travel into your glass. Either way, we hope you enjoy our beer, a handcrafted Krebs original. Style: American wheat Color: Golden opaque Ingredients: 2-row malted barley and malted wheat, Liberty and Cascade hops Bitterness Units: 15 IBU's Alcohol: Alcohol by volume 5.0%, Alcohol by weight 3.9, also available in 3.2% Alcohol by weight version

Cloudy brown body with medium bubbly head. Initial aroma of a tripel with fruit, banana. Thin flavor with light slice, wheat, sweet clean finish that totally disappears.

12 oz bottle via trade with jzzbassman - thanks Monte! Pours cloudy amber iwth a small white head. Aroma of wheat, dough, and a bit of lemon. Flavor is fairly sweet. More caramel than I would have anticipated. A bit of fruit also there.. Some lemon and some pear. Palate is light and carbonated. An easy drinker that was quite pleasant tasting.

Much thanks to hopdog for unveiling this one. I’ve wanted to try this for a while. Appears an unfiltered hazy gold with a small white cap that fizzles out. It looks a bit like a hefe/tripel. The smell is yeasty and smells a bit tripel-esque with some wheat, banana, and pear. Taste is a slightly bland version of the aromas. Mouthfeel is dry, fruity, and low level carbonation.

Bottle acquired in trade with (thanks!). Poured deep and hazy golden color with an averaged sized off white head. Some small particles. Aromas of fruits, bubblegum, and light bananas. The aroma actually reminded me a little of a trippel. Tastes of lemons, citrus, light wheat and bananas. Tastes were a little bit of a let down compared to the aroma. Lightly sweet. Thinner body.

Poured a hazy, yellow brown color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of yeast, citrus, light spices and some sweet bubblegum. Taste was dry and yeasty, with some light citrus, some banana, but overall watery and fairly bland.

Sweet malty smell that is mildly citrus influenced. Cloudy yellow with a decent white head. Breadywith a big malt profile and some citrus spiciness in the finish. The citrus sweetness becomes more pronounced in the aftertase. I’d have to say this is pretty good. Thanks go to Flacoalto for this one...or was it Beerhandy...damn same day beer deliveries!

(12 oz bottle: Obtained in trade with robanion, thanks Ray!) Very grassy aroma doesn’t smell anything like a wheat beer, though in time, the grassiness does fade a bit, allowing slight aromas of yeast and spice through. The flavor seems outside the style as well, but at least we have some flavor here, and it’s not unpleasant either. That’s always a pleasant surprise when I’m sampling an American Wheat. With some wheat maltiness, a fair amount of fruity esters, and a modest contribution of spice and yeast, I’m not minding this beer at all. It’s a bit bready, and the hops does seem to impart a mild bitterness, but these are not strong enough to be distractions. But there is a slight tin flavor in the finish, and that _is_ a small problem. Light-to-medium body doesn’t feel thin or watery on the palate. The beer is significantly carbonated and results in a beer that’s not so easy to drink -- I’m already feeling bloated and I’m only halfway through the glass. Dark golden and hazy color is nice, and so is the tall (but bubbly) off-white head. It gradually settles to a quarter-inch thick layer, but the bubbles are just too large to stick to the glass, either sliding down or dissipating completely. Some issues here and there keep this from being an above average American Wheat beer, but I appreciate that it’s not just some watery garbage passed off as craft beer.

Hazy orange color with thin white head. Slightly spicy aroma. Malt and spice flavor. Good beer, but hardly exciting.
