Commercial Description:
Miner Mishap is our version of a traditional German Schwarzbier, also known as "Black Pilsner" or simply "Black Lager". Our traditional version was formulated by our friend William Scott (or Scotty as he’s known around the brewery), an award-winning homebrewer and certified beer judge who has always been very generous about sharing his creations and his seemingly unlimited knowledge of beer. It seemed only fitting that since we started out as a homebrewery, we would try and recreate one of Scotty’s homebrews (which are typically 5 or 10 gallon batched) here in our 15 barrel 鸑 gallon) brewhouse. Brewed almost entirely with malt imported from Weyermann Specialty Malts in Bamberg, Germany and hopped with Imported German Perle and Hallertaur Mittlefreu hops, Miner Mishap is truly a one-of-a-kind original.

Very black pour, low head, light lace. Sweet and sour aroma. Almost no carbonation, sour with a sweet tinge of soy sauce or worcestershire. A sour alcoholic taste, with an unpleasant metallic aftertaste. Gross all the way around.

Bottle thanks to Soonah. Pours a amber hue of black with beige head. The aroma is ashy with some notes of caramel and Pepsi. The flavor is caramel and slight ashy bitterness with some fruity notes. It finishes on the sweet side with some chocolate and cola. Easy drinking.

Dark brown with a fleeting tan head. Sweetened black malt and dark cocoa aromas. Medium body with light carbonation. Decent dusty dark malt flavors with light cocoa and earthy yeast.

Bottle courtesy of Soonah. Pours murky dark brown with a thin light tan head. The nose is roasted malt and cocoa. The taste follows the aroma. Medium bodied. Decent – easy drinker. Thanks John!

Appearance: Pours a clear, dark reddish-brown body with a wispy, off-white head. Smell: Chocolaty, darkened grains but, there again, is an infectious, tart-scented nose. For Heaven’s sake, Pete, get a grip! Taste: Gah! Tart sourness from sip one. Here and there you’ll find tastes of chocolate, lightly darkened malts, and what seem to be spicy Noble hops. Though, sadly, the sharp tart sourness spoils the whole deal literally and figuratively. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium-high carbonation. Drinkability: "Miner Mishap is truly a one-of-a-kind original." They’re right in that regard. Seemed like this would’ve been the one to have potential were it not for the quality control issues.

On tap at the brewery. Not bad. I’ve never had a schwarzbier before, so I have no idea how this holds up stylistically, but I really enjoyed this beer. I don’t much care for the other choc beers. Opaque, nearly black with no head. Dense but smooth body of chocolate, coffee, and sweet toasted malts.
