Commercial Description:
Miner Mishap is our version of a traditional German Schwarzbier, also known as "Black Pilsner" or simply "Black Lager". Our traditional version was formulated by our friend William Scott (or Scotty as he’s known around the brewery), an award-winning homebrewer and certified beer judge who has always been very generous about sharing his creations and his seemingly unlimited knowledge of beer. It seemed only fitting that since we started out as a homebrewery, we would try and recreate one of Scotty’s homebrews (which are typically 5 or 10 gallon batched) here in our 15 barrel 鸑 gallon) brewhouse. Brewed almost entirely with malt imported from Weyermann Specialty Malts in Bamberg, Germany and hopped with Imported German Perle and Hallertaur Mittlefreu hops, Miner Mishap is truly a one-of-a-kind original.

12-oz. Thanks, Skoi! Pours black with a thin dark head. There’s caramel, molasses, and black bread maltiness in the nose, and these all come back for the mid-palate. Body’s thin, maybe even watery, and a bit fizzy. No hop balance to speak of, at least not that I am tasting. Fairly well uninspired.

12oz bottle. By far, the best of the 4 beers from this brewery that I sampled. Aroma of barkers chocolate, roasted dark malt, black liquorice and fennel. Pours dark, dark brown with rich amber highlights and a frothy khaki head. A tad lean on the palate. I was hoping for a little more body. Bitter and slightly astringent roasted malt, earthy hops, anise, bakers chocolate with a disappointing watery finish.

12 oz Bottle. Pours a very attractive deep black color with a nice looking tan head that disappears a little too quickly. It has a little bit of a different nose. It has some good roasted malt notes mixed in with that cook corn aroma. Lots of toasted coffee and chocolate flavors. Leave a bit of a funky mouth feel in the aftertaste. It’s almost like a "thin" porter. It doesn’t make me crave more. Overall, not bad, but not great.

Pours black with a reddish tint with a ridiculously thick light tan head. Head dissipates VERY quickly. Odd aroma...some roasted malts, some caramel, but something odd and spicy in there, though it doesn’t seem to work with the rest of the aroma to me. Flavor is very tinny and metallic. Bitter coffee, bitter chocolate, some heavily roasted malt and some roasted nuts, but this just tastes like I’m licking a piece of metal as I drink it. Shallow on the palate with not much aftertaste. Seriously wondering if this is a bad bottle, so I’ll re-rate after I try another...

Bottle poured dark amber color, still got some light through. Fizzy tan head. Strong coffee taste with a slight smokey aftertaste. Very heavy on the toasted malts but light on the palate. I was expecting more from this beer, so I was a little disappointed just because of presumptions. Still not a bad beer.

Bottle poured near espresso color with moderately sustained tank head and good lacing. Some yeast settling to the bottom. Mild toasty chocolate aroma, but also something very sweet, almost fruity. Bitter, toasty, dry with medium thin body.

Bottle courtesy of soonah. Pours dark brown with a thin off white head. Smells of roasted malt, molasses, some caramel. Tastes of lightly bitter chocolate, some roastiness and sweet malt. Nice roasty finish.

Bottle from Soonah; Nose of chocolate, with caramelized sugar and a light coffe note; clear dark brown with a big straw head; flavor has coffee, molasses, a little hop bitterness, and some peppery spiciness. Not as good as Black Bavarian but quite a good one!
