Nice red brown color and well proportioned head. Flavor is good but not great. Some roasted caramel malt with a large dose of sweetness and resin hops. The bitterness of the hops reminds me of a strong, black tea. Aftertaste is bitter followed by maltiness. Good with BBQ. dp (512), uniontown, Ohio, USA

Dark copper color with a sizable, mogul/rocky, ecru head. Smells like an amber, with some mild caramel and a hint of orange zest. The aroma to be is not that inviting and seems to have a heavy bread dough aspect that is way to sweet. Light resin mixed with a considerable amount of grain helps this one in the flavor as well as the finish. Seems somewhat watery to me. Flavors seem to bounce all over the place and never seem to come together. A decent brown/amber, but that still doesn’t say much in my book. ajk (2), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA does not count | 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | May 18, 2005 I’ve seen this beer many places but never tried it, and it was the most interesting-looking thing on the menu at the Friendly Tavern in Zionsville last night. The beer is a transparent dark copper with a white head that dissipates quickly. The nose reveals malt but not much else; there’s no hop aroma. The flavor is hidden by fizz at first but finally reveals itself as that of a brown ale. But it’s not what I’d expect of an American brown; the hop flavor isn’t pronounced enough. Finish is malt and apple and is short-lived. I’d rather have a Newcastle, providing it hasn’t skunked, because it doesn’t have that off-putting fizz.

Malty and herbal aroma, toffee and milk chocolate sweetness. Flavour is also semi-sweet, malty and toasty with a hop character that I’m not familiar with. Woody but also with a herbal-minty aroma. Light dried fruits up the complexity a bit. Very nice beer. willblake (2176), Belcamp, Maryland, USA

I don’t know what possessed me to bring these Matt beers home from work other than to try some of the brands that got me hooked on better beer what seems like a million years ago. This stuff is certainly not what it used to be, but it’s still a drinkable and cheap quaff. Chestnut brown pour with big white head. Chocolate malts peek through on nose and come in fully on the palate. Sticky but not very full body, too effy. Sort of a burnt white bread thing going on. Finishes grassy, lingering. | 2.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | May 1, 2005 Bottle: LIght malt and moderate hop aroma with a pretty strong fish smell. Pours a transparent amber with an off-white head. Very light with a light citrus hop finish. Fish smell is a huge flaw.
